A Widow’s Game Ending Explained
The film starts at a bloody crime scene in a parking lot. The grieving widow, Maje, looks heartbroken at the news while the detective on the case, Eva, questions the validity of the burglary gone wrong theory if the victim, Arturo, was stabbed with a kitchen knife. As the investigation starts, the pathologist doing the autopsy tells Eva that this was premeditated and wasn’t just a burglary gone wrong, strengthening her initial hunch.
From Maje’s friends, Eva learns that she might have been with a guy named Daniel and might also have been physically abusive. Eva questions Maje about her affair, which she agrees to have been doing and tells her that she was with Daniel the night Arturo was murdered instead of being at work. However, in the midst of the investigation, one of Eva’s colleagues, Berni, during a different case.
Two months later, Eva and Turri listen in on Maje talking to Salva about something mysterious. It’s out of context, but it puts a whole lot of suspicion on their relationship.

Why Did Maje Kill Arturo?
Maje’s life has been restrictive and extremely religious, resulting in her having no freedom. She got married young, and Arturo wasn’t as open-minded, even resorting to violence if she went out with her friends. Or, at least that’s what she told her friend Sonia. It’s unclear whether or not Arturo was ever violent because Maje clearly lies to everyone about almost everything. In reality, she is suffocated in her relationship with Arturo and desperate to find independence. She cheats on Arturo constantly to get that high, and everything that she accuses him of doing is everything she is doing to him.
Why Did Salva Kill Arturo?
When Maje learnt about one of Arturo’s friends dying and their wife getting insurance money, she couldn’t let this opportunity pass up. She contacts one of her boyfriends, Salva, a coworker, and fills him in on a sad, pathetic and fabricated story about her married life and asks him to get rid of Arturo, promising to be with him if he does this for her.

Salva is completely engrossed with Maje and hangs on her every word. Maje orchestrates the entire murder, and Salva is the muscle who does the stabbing. Right afterwards, she instructs him to stay away for a while so that it doesn’t bring up suspicions. Salva thinks of himself as lucky to be with someone like Maje. He’s desperate for her attention and thus doesn’t want any way that she will leave him.
How Do the Police Catch the Culprits?
Having tapped Maje’s phone, the police listen to everything that Maje and Salva talk about and are certain that it’s the two of them who are behind the murder. However, they still have to have proof to make the charges stick. Elsewhere, Maje tells her mother that Salva killed Arturo without her knowledge and paints him to be a stalker, but her mother assures her that she is not at fault. She then calls Salva about the police closing the investigation, and he assures her that they have no clues against him since he hasn’t been questioned yet. Eva and her team listen to this entire conversation with a smug face.

In the end, the police hid a recorder on the table, and they picked up on Maje accepting that she gave Salva the key to the garage. Salva instructs her to lie to the police that the key was misplaced, which also gets recorded. In the end, Eva arrests Salva from the hospital and Maje from outside Daniel’s house. Both of them are interrogated separately, but neither accepts what they or the other did. In the end, however, Salva does end up changing his statement after he finds out that Maje is cheating on him in prison as well, resulting in Salva getting 17 years and Maje getting 22 years in prison.

She’s really a strong woman who is capable of cheating and lying and even let someone commit a crime for her. Really with good storytelling about life and betrayal.
