A Condition Called Love, also known as Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai (花野井くんと恋の病), is a Japanese manga written by Morino Megumi. It started on KakaoPage on July 25, 2016, and was later fully published by D&C Media on November 4, 2016. The English version is licensed by Yen Press.
The manga series first appeared in Kodansha’s Dessert magazine back in December 2017 and has since then been compiled into 14 tankōbon volumes as of November 2023. The anime adaptation that we are getting is produced by East Fish Studio which is set to premiere in April 2024.
The anime series features “Kimi no Sei” (“It’s Your Fault”), performed by Sexy Zone, as its opening theme song. The ending theme song is the Japanese version of “Every Second,” performed by Mina Okabe. Crunchyroll holds the license for the series outside of Asia, with the exception of the Middle East and CIS, while Netflix has licensed the series in some selected areas in Asia.
Hotaru Hinase, a freshman in high school, holds her family and friends dearer than anything else. But, on the other hand, love remains an enigma to her, a realm she’s content to leave unexplored.
One day, while at a café with her trusted friend, Hotaru witnesses the odd breakup of Hananoi, a charming honour student. Later, as she walks home through the snow, she finds him alone and extends her umbrella in a simple act of compassion.
The following day, Hananoi surprises Hotaru by appearing in her classroom, and asking her to be his girlfriend. Though she declines, Hananoi persists, showering her with gestures of kindness. Slowly, Hotaru finds herself experiencing unfamiliar emotions and fascinated by the possibility of love, she agrees to give their relationship a chance.

The story centres around Hotaru’s journey of discovering love and the complexities that come with it. It becomes all the more interesting because of the opposites attract dynamic here. Hotaru is a straight-laced girl who is just experiencing the perks of being in love. She is shy and pretty introverted when it comes to her relationships.
But, she falls for Hananoi, whose love is a bit obsessive. He is almost too much to handle at times. Thus, it is the story of two individuals who are very different but they fall in love nonetheless.

A Condition Called Love features several key characters, Hotaru Hinase, the protagonist of the series, is a first-year high school student who values her family and friends above all else. Hananoi is a handsome student who experiences a breakup early in the series. He becomes infatuated with Hotaru and persistently pursues her. We will also see some supporting characters as their friends.
