Netflix’s ‘The Wrong Missy’ and The Same Old Love Formula

Directed by Tyler Spindel, The Wrong Missy dropped on Netflix on May 13th. This romantic comedy starring Lauren Lapkus and David Spade follows a basic storyline of love between two opposites.

The Missy’s..

The movie starts with Tim (David Spade) going on a blind date with a woman named Melissa aka Missy (Lauren Lapkus.) And as expected, the date is pretty horrible and Tim tries to escape. Classic jumping out of the window trick and all that! The date is done and dusted. And that’s obvious as we can see how horrified Tim was as he didn’t date for three months after that.

Later, Tim meets a beautiful blonde girl at the airport, Melissa (Molly Sims) as they crash into each other (love at first sight it is). They pick up their bags and go off to their destination then they realize they have switched their bags and therefore, they meet again. The story is stale and predictable.

Nate (Nick Swardson,) the closest friend of Tim and the HR representative of the company plays an amazing role. He constantly spies on Tim and gives out his weird and funny advice to him. But things take a turn when he advises Tim to invite Melissa to the Corporate Retreat.

Ohh, the mixup!!

Tim manages to text Missy instead of Melissa and he does not realize this until the day they are supposed to meet. Noob mistake, Tim. As Missy and Tim reach their destination, all hell breaks loose as Missy was just being Missy. The whole sequence is funny yet overwhelming to watch. What happens later is what I expected from the very start. Tim starts falling in love with Missy, who doesn’t know that she wasn’t supposed to be there.

The film features a ‘threesome’ scene too and it does not include any nudity. Infact, the scene is weirdly hilarious.

The character of Missy is built in a way that she creates chaos wherever she goes. Missy is a psychic, hypnotist, paramedic, therapist and what not… basically, a jack of all trades, but a loud and unmannered person. She even tries to seduce Tim in front of his whole company. She loves Tim and it’s beautiful but it’s just not the love Tim wants at the moment. He wants to get rid of her as soon as he can. When finally Tim meets Melissa and he realizes she isn’t what he wants – it’s too late. But is Tim really ready for all the Missy madness yet?

Love? The winner.

The whole drama of Missy realizing that she wasn’t the one supposed to be there and leaving Tim behind and him restlessly waiting for her to talk is just boring. Sooner or later, Missy and Tim meet. They talk, he apologizes and hurrays! They reunite… The story is boring and somewhere offensive too. I can’t deny the minuscule of a laugh this movie brought but it wasn’t worth all the time. Tim accepted her when he thought she is what he needs and that he needs to be free. Otherwise, the whole time he either wished she was dead or just gone.

Love in The Wrong Missy is directionless and unwanted throughout till the last few minutes. It’s one hell of a roller coaster you wouldn’t want to ride. The film fails to portray the feeling of love.

It’s not a must-watch, there’s nothing you’ll miss without watching this.

The Wrong Missy is streaming on Netflix.
