Steel Ball Run JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Episode 5 Review

A Mysterious Contestant Threatens to Expose Gyro
Mystery thickens surrounding the past of Gyro, and it culminates in something explosive in this episode. Johnny has been curious about Gyro from the very beginning, and even in this episode he asks why he was called a magistrate. Gyro simply evades his question because he doesn’t want anyone to know who he is and what he actually does. However, his attempt to hide his past does not go Gyro’s way because someone who knows Gyro comes into his life.

We see that Gyro, Johnny and Tim all managed to cross the desert and land themselves at the checkpoint. That is when the 4th contestant comes their way, who is known as Oye. This strange man searches through Gyro’s belongings and finds something very important. This bit of information becomes key in the second half of this episode. However, he does not leave the place unscathed as he gets discovered by Tim.
Oye Hunts Gyro in One of the Season’s Deadliest Battles

Oye was not a good man, and he was there to hunt Gyro down. The fight that ensued between Gyro and company with Oye was one of the best in this season yet. First of all, Oye had a very unique ability with its own unique functions. He has also become a Stand user like Johnny, and again his abilities reflected the kind of attacks he was known for in his life. Countering him was deadly for all three main characters. Until the middle of this episode, it was difficult to guess who might survive and who might die.
Gyro Doesn’t Need a Stand to Be a Badass
If you thought Gyro was charming before, after this episode, you will think he is way cooler. First of all, he takes the centre stage here and showcases how he doesn’t need a Stand to defeat his enemies, who are way stronger than him. With just a steel ball, he manages to deflect someone with a very strong Stand ability. Not only that, but he also comes up with unique ideas to defeat his enemies, and they actually work.
Gyro and Johnny’s Growing Bond Makes Them a Duo to Watch

I also loved the chemistry between Gyro and Johnny even though this started off on the wrong foot when they first met. Johnny refused to leave Gyro alone in the desert with Oye and accompanied him to help him out. They have definitely become one of my favourite JoJo duos, and I am excited to see how the relationship will pan out later.
Verdict

The way this episode ended was also something very unexpected. One thing that I love about every JoJo franchise is how uniquely they managed to present every fight. You will never know how the characters would interact or how they will utilise their abilities against their opponents.
Needless to say, the adventure continues on with great promise. I absolutely loved this episode, and the animation was also really good. Every panel looked like a painting, and the background music complemented the episode greatly as well. I’m eagerly waiting for the next episode to see what adventure awaits Gyro and Johnny.
