The Girlfriend Ending Explained
The series opens with Laura and Danny sharing a very intimate bond, and he wants to introduce his girlfriend to her. The request takes her by surprise as she thinks that Danny is different with his newest girlfriend in comparison to previous partners, but she agrees to meet her anyway. Initial introductions go well, but she can’t help but notice how touchy the two are. The night starts to slowly get more and more uncomfortable as they get to know Cherry more.
The night ends with Laura accidentally dropping hot coffee on Cherry’s lap and later, Moses ending up nowhere to be found. With the suspicions slowly increasing and Danny pulling away from his parents, Laura goes into full-blown investigative mode. One day, she walks up on Cherry punching another man after having an altercation and is left speechless.
On the other side, we see Cherry picking up on Laura’s disdain for her. Coming from a working-class house, she is aware of the difference between her and Danny and tries her best to make an impression on his mother, but overhearing her comments against her and seeing how Laura looks at her, she, too, is defensive and on edge. On the flip side of the confrontation scene, we see that the man she was arguing with went off on her, and it wasn’t the other way around.

When the pair head to Spain with his family and family friends, things get more tense as he learns about Danny’s relationship with Brigitte and the visible discomfort that everyone feels for her. As the competition gets a bit intense between Cherry and Laura, Cherry shares that his relationship with Laura is a bit creepy. He doesn’t take it well and storms off. Cherry eventually has a conversation with Howard, and the two bond over their own pains.
Later, Laura and Isabella continue to make passive-aggressive comments against Cherry, which, coupled with her discomfort around her unfamiliar situation, pushes her more and more on edge. Thankfully, Cherry tells Laura the truth about the flight and the new clothes, and they promise to be open about everything from now on. Things seem to be getting better between the two of them, and Cherry even tells her about the man she punched in front of her shop. In turn, Laura opens up about cheating on Howard after Rose’s death, and Cherry promises to keep her secret.

However, the next morning, things come to a head when Laura learns that Cherry had destroyed her “ex’s” wedding and immediately tells her to stay away from Daniel. Cherry, in turn, threatens to expose her secret if she tells Daniel anything.
What happens in the end?
Trying to impress Danny and get a leg-up on Laura, Cherry starts to go deeper into debt and lies. When Nicholas contacts her to stay away from him, with the knowledge that she destroyed his wedding, she asks her mother to lie for her and tells Daniel that Nicholas is spreading lies about her. Cherry later speaks to Laura about the latter calling Nicholas and speaks loud enough for Danny to overhear, creating a rift between the mother and son.

However, things come to a head when Daniel has an accident and almost dies and eventually, Laura lies to Cherry and tells her that Daniel is dead. She eventually feels guilty for the lie and decides to come clean, but finds Cherry living a “luxurious life” in Daniel’s new apartment. Laura decides not to tell Cherry the truth when she hears that they got engaged and rushes back home with Daniel’s laptop from her logged-in accounts.
Laura takes Daniel away to Spain before Cherry can get in touch with him, and he’s devastated. Laura further deletes and blocks Cherry’s number on Daniel’s new phone and replaces it with another number, and has Cherry fired from her job.
Does Cherry find out the truth?
Wanting to turn her life around, Cherry reaches out to one of Howard’s friends and is shocked to learn that Daniel is alive and is in the same building. She rushes to meet him, and the truth eventually comes out in front of all of them. Daniel is irate and stops talking to Laura, and Cherry decides to take revenge on her for ruining her life.

What happens to Laura?
With Daniel and Cherry now realising how toxic Laura is, they distance themselves from her. Moreover, she is sued by an ex-employee, and others also accuse her of creating a toxic work environment, leading to her losing a big client. As Cherry manipulates everyone to think that Laura is an abusive, irrational woman, Daniel proposes to Cherry. This sends her over the edge and after she spends a night with Lilith, Howard learns about her affair and decides to leave her, too.
Laura vs Cherry – Who wins?
With her options running out, Laura meets Cherry’s father in the nursing home, hoping to get more information. However, all she learns is that he had a terrible accident that left him bedridden and that he hates his daughter. Concerned, Laura goes to meet Tracey, and she tells her that Cherry doesn’t give up anything when she has her sights on it. Desperate, Laura tries to talk to Daniel, but Cherry intercepts her messages. When she learns that Laura went to talk to her father, she destroys her art gallery and spins the tale to show that Laura has lost her mind.

In the end, however, it’s Cherry who comes out winning when Laura drugs Daniel to get him to listen to Tracey’s recording, and Cherry interferes. The two get into an argument and, in the end, trying to save Cherry, Daniel accidentally kills his mother.
Whose version of events is the truth?
Throughout the runtime, we see two versions of one event played out in every episode. The series gets viewers confused about who is telling the truth and who isn’t, as both versions seem possible. However, with Tracey’s comment about Cherry not going back to old habits, one can get an idea that it might’ve been her who was a bit intense, if not flat-out manipulative. In the end, however, both of them have some amount of truth to their perspectives, and both turn out to be immensely toxic, manipulative and possessive.
What does the ending signify?

In The Girlfriend episode 6, Daniel finds Laura’s phone months after her death. By this time, he is married to Cherry with a baby on the way. He finally listens to Tracey’s recording and is left stumped when she says that Cherry will do anything to get her way and implores Laura to keep Daniel safe; otherwise, she will harm anyone who tries to stop her. Daniel is left horrified, realising that Tracey was spot on – she did indeed get rid of Laura when she tried to stop her from getting Daniel. However, it’s too late since there is no escape now.
