The Girlfriend Review: An Insane Story About Blurred Lines

The Girlfriend Review: Laura’s life is perfect – she has a loving husband, a beautiful home and a doting son whom she spoils. However, he brings his new girlfriend to their home, and things spiral out of control for Laura, who is immediately suspicious. As she tries to get to the bottom of Cherry’s schemes, the lines blur between healthy cautiousness and paranoia.

The Girlfriend Review

If the dating world wasn’t bad enough already, with terrible prospects lining up to ruin your life, singles will now have to keep possessive mothers in mind if they are hoping to have their happily ever after. Of course, The Girlfriend, Prime Video’s latest release, will have you believing that there are no happy endings in the world as Daniel, his girlfriend Cherry, and mother Laura butt heads over both women trying to possess the precious, baby-faced man.

The Girlfriend is one of those rare shows that are completely insane and will leave you gasping in almost every episode. You are either horrified or feeling cringy at the audacity that both Cherry and Laura show in this game of wits. The series makes us question who is telling the truth in every episode, and that makes both Cherry and Laura unreliable narrators, both remembering particular situations completely differently. It’s a very interesting way of telling the story, and it makes it more thrilling for viewers because we are left to question what the truth is.

It’s a maddening few hours as poor Daniel is left to juggle an inappropriate mother who stops at nothing to hop on her son’s lap and a crazy girlfriend who doesn’t think twice before trying to murder someone. I really enjoyed the flow of the series and the storytelling. The pacing is breathless and will leave you questioning your and the characters’ sanities around every turn. I think the fact that we can’t trust either of the characters is what makes the series so claustrophobic.

Of course, several moments in the series feel far-fetched and impossible. The way Laura and Cherry get away with some atrocious behaviour is a little unbelievable. But, you know what? I am here for the insanity. The series commits to this bonkers storyline so feverently that you can’t help but accept the more insane details. It’s improbable, but it’s so entertaining.

In the end, the series puts forth some good points that bring home the points surrounding what the truth is. A family is a delicate balance that works seamlessly based on many factors. When one thread gets torn, it’s difficult for the unit to sustain correctly. I think the series does a good job of highlighting that fact, as well as telling us that sometimes some people are just handed a crazy mother and girlfriend together, and that sets their life on fire. What can you do about it?

With great performances and an insane story, I found The Girlfriend to be quite enjoyable. It’s a fun treat for anyone who likes something insane and thrilling, but it might not bring in repeat viewers because the tension here hinges on two crazy women fighting over a man. That storyline is fun once, but then it loses its charm.
