Beyond the Bar Episode 5 Review: Hyo-min’s First Big Win in Court

Beyond the Bar Episode 5 was a nice episode that showcased the professional growth of Kang Hyo-min. Not much happened relationship-wise between Attorney Yoon and Hyo-min.

Beyond the Bar Episode 5 Recap

Beyond the Bar Episode 5: Jung Chae-yeon

Today’s episode begins with a battle between two friends-turned-rivals as they both claim ownership of a painting worth millions. One of them bought it for a cheaper price from a flea market, while the other claims it to be a masterpiece of a renowned artist. Who is telling the truth and who got duped into buying something fake lies at the heart of this episode. Here, we also got to see the adult version of the twin sister of Hyo-min, who, despite being deaf, can lip-read properly. She brings the painting case to Hyo-min, as her friend was the one who got sued by the famous artist.

But other than that, we also get to see a much-needed confrontation between Yoon and his ex-wife. Apparently, she later realised she wanted to be a mother and assures Yoon that her decision not to have a child with him has nothing to do with his nature. However, her assurance has no effect as Yoon becomes visibly devastated. Other than that, the episode properly dives headfirst into Hyo-min’s first experience at fighting a case against a proper lawyer, that too, against the Lee and Seo firm.

Needless to say, Hyo-min goes all out while preparing for the trial and even asks Yoon for help. The segment was really important as Yoon gave her essential tips and tricks on presenting her first case with confidence and flair. However, because of her client, Jong-ae, Hyo-min’s first trial goes badly as the one she’s defending starts to have an emotional and mental breakdown. She refuses to answer anything properly, and this is why Hyo-min gets blamed for taking the case rashly by her superior.

The information about Jong-ae having mental disability also reaches the other lawyers, and they utilise it fully by ruthlessly questioning her. That is when Hyo-min takes a break and has a proper chat with Jong-ae. Then she gets a shocking revelation that Jong-ae actually hides the face of her father in every one of her paintings. When she was very young, her father left her and her mother, and since then, Jong-ae has missed her father dearly. But because her mother absolutely hated any talk of her father, Jong-ae made sure to never utter his name and hide his face in all her paintings.

Later, Hyo-min asks Jong-ae about this painting in the courtroom, and this time, without fearing consequences, she tells the truth. Hyo-min also proves the painting’s legitimacy by bringing out more paintings by Jong-ae and utilising a flashlight to reveal the hidden picture of her father. Thus, Hyo-min manages to prove that the one accusing was the one who plagiarised and wins the case. At the end, Yoon even calls Hyo-min an attorney, and that is definitely the biggest highlight of this episode.

Today’s episode was a really balanced one as it showcased a very good case and also how much Hyo-min has grown. The professional bond between Yoon and Hyo-min is also strengthening, and I hope we get to see more moments between them. Other than that, the fact that Yoon has acknowledged Hyo-min as a proper attorney tells how much he believes in her capabilities.
