H. G. Wells’s 1898 novel The War of the Worlds has been a favourite among science fiction lovers since its inception, with the novel being adapted multiple times over the years in different media. The most memorable among them are the 1938 radio broadcast narrated and directed by Orson Welles and the 2005 film directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Cruise. In 2025, thus, it’s no shock to anyone that we get another adaptation of the film.
The newest release takes a screenlife approach and follows Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officer Will Radford, who finds himself in a shocking situation when aliens descend upon Earth to take over the planet. However, he soon realises that the enemies are not just descending from the sky, but they are also right on his doorstep.
However, despite having an uber successful novel to adapt and several films before it, Prime Video’s newest release has left fans fuming and disappointed. Users on X feel nothing short of disappointed, with many claiming this new entry to be the “worst movie they have seen in years”. A user pointed out, “Holy moly, just watched one of the worst movies I have ever seen. 90 min that felt like 6 hours. Bad acting, and shit tons of stupidity, this movie actually pissed me off. I watched it on Prime and I still want my money back!” (@TheGamesTester)
Interestingly, a lot of viewers cannot overlook the sheer irony of the story being brought forth, considering it’s from a giant corporation like Amazon. One user, @MendezMovieRPT, wrote, “I cannot believe I just watched an Amazon Prime film, using an iconic IP, in which Amazon literally helped save the world from an alien invasion. We use to make jokes about corporations doing stuff like this.”
