The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 5: Still

The episode opens with Hikaru gently trying to earn a cat’s trust, offering food from his hand in an effort to appear more human. Watching this, Yoshiki quietly acknowledges Hikaru’s ongoing struggle to suppress his inhuman instincts and live like a normal person.

Meanwhile, Asako and Yuuki engage in a lighthearted conversation, during which Asako reveals her eerie sensitivity to strange voices that only she can hear. When she urges Yuuki to take a different route home based on one of these “premonitions,” it adds a new layer of intrigue to the series’ supernatural undertones.

Later on, Hikaru and Yoshiki spend time at home together before deciding to attend the summer festival. In a touching scene, the two are joined by Yoshiki’s sister and Kaoru, and the group enjoys the festivities. But in the background, the village elders discuss the failed ritual involving Hikaru. They propose trying again, though they note only Hikaru’s bloodline can participate, unveiling more cryptic details about the village’s connection to a mysterious deity.

The climax of the episode comes when Tanaka sets up a spiritual barrier that inadvertently traps Hikaru. Realizing he’s stumbled upon something supernatural, Tanaka begins his pursuit, marking a tense turn in the story.

The Summer Hikaru Died Episode 5: Still

Today’s episode starts with Kaoru, Yoshiki’s sister, literally coming face to face with a ghost. It is apparent that she can also see these creatures, and I believe Yoshiki’s contact with the Hikaru might have something to do with this. Later, we see Hikaru again asking Yoshiki to touch him, and this time, Hikaru even touches back. The experience that Yoshiki felt was pretty uncomfortable, as it felt like Hikaru tried to engulf him in his essence. He remembers how Rie had told him that once the spirit gets attached to him, it will stay with him for a lifetime, and in doing so, Yoshiki will attract unforeseen entities.

When Yoshiki lets Hikaru know about Kaoru’s incident, Hikaru promises him to go to his house and deal with the ghost himself. He does just that, but in a very weird manner, and sucks Yoshiki inside a bathtub. This segment was easily the creepiest out of all the episodes I have seen. Yoshiki gets pressed in between slimy brain matter, and it looked really disconcerting.

In the segment, Yoshiki also gets a flashback of the time when he and Hikaru fought. They did it over a dead bird that they were taking care of. None of them would take the blame for its death on their heads and would blame each other. Here, they go through a pretty intense fight. But later, we get to know that it was the ghost that was showing Yoshiki visions in order to control him.

Verdict

The ghost also attacks Hikaru in Yoshiki’s form, and Hikaru somehow manages to save Yoshiki. After this incident, Yoshiki becomes very disturbed by the thought of almost killing Hikaru. This segment again solidified their love because they both want to protect each other, as they can not bear their lover getting hurt. I liked that Yoshiki even starts to hope for a future where Hikaru would be able to live like a normal human.
