The Old Guard 2 Review
2020’s The Old Guard wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, and thus, I was a bit confused as to why we were getting a second part. And with the second part now out on Netflix, I can say that I continue to feel annoyed and confused about this film’s existence, considering 15 more minutes would’ve answered the cliffhanger that it leaves us with.
This middle film (because clearly, this is a middle film) is 106 minutes of absolutely nothing other than some exposition and gearing up for a “final” chapter. It showcases Andy getting her groove back, the audience learning a little more about immortality and setting the scene for the action that we will get to see in an (obvious) upcoming film.

It’s neither thrilling nor particularly entertaining because nothing really happens here. It’s that cash grab of a movie that leaves you confused with its sudden ending, and even more so, why they couldn’t end the franchise here and now with another stupid fight and some exposition. I mean, that’s what this film does anyway. You don’t feel for any of the characters or their mission. They come across as very cocky people who constantly make incorrect choices.

Quỳnh is brought back to do nothing other than fight with Andy, while new character Tuah’s only role is as the exposition dumper who plays on command. Discord’s purpose to exist in this film is so obvious and shallow that it’s embarrassing that they have to even talk about it. Uma Thurman is fine, but her character gives her nothing to do other than look mildly annoyed sometimes. She’s not even threatening!
I don’t know what else to discuss because there is so less to dissect. The action is fine, I liked watching women take a more active role in fight sequences. The cinematography is nothing to write home about, and neither is the music. It’s just a very below-average film that doesn’t have any reason to exist.
Final Thoughts

The Old Guard 2 is a cash grab that doesn’t have a reason to exist. None of the characters are interesting enough to watch for a third film, in a story that has nothing gripping to offer. I don’t know why we are being subjected to this.
