The Legacy of the Raisingghs: Kull Review

In Hotstar’s Kull, a royal family’s dysfunctional members find themselves at odds with each other when their patriarch dies and everyone’s true colours start to show. There’s a lot of drama in the series, which gets progressively more disturbing with each passing episode, and for those who love to watch people bickering over the stupidest things and making irrational decisions, this one’s for you.

The Legacy of the Raisingghs: Kull is as unhinged as its characters. The storyline and characters come and go as they please without any inclination to hold on to consistency. Things are introduced and then promptly forgotten, as are the characters. It’s just so odd to watch the series introduce a conflict or a character and then forget about them for episodes on end. They are brought back up later when they are convenient to the plot and are equally easily forgotten again.

It’s like a fever dream unfolding, without any rhyme or reason. People bicker about the same things, and although thoroughly entertaining, it doesn’t progress the plot in any way. The series tries to give the impression that something is very important and will be the main plot point, but 5 minutes later, it’s like it never happened. It’s so bizarre. The inconsistent storytelling is not just annoying but confusing. It’s confusing to understand what the main goal of the story is because the creators don’t seem to know it themselves.

As a result, The Legacy of the Raisingghs: Kull turns out to be thoroughly half-baked and all over the place. Everyone behaves in an unhinged manner, and the characters are so over-the-top that they are unbelievable. There’s this one time in the series when Amol Parashar’s Abhimanyu snorts cocaine from the table like it’s powdered sugar. There are several moments like this throughout that feel dramatic for the sake of being dramatic. No one is smart, and people do things just because that’s what will incite viewers the most.

I guess the performances are the best part of this series. Amol Parashar is absolutely fantastic as the entitled Prince of the Raisingghs, and so is his enabling older sister Indrani. Together, they create the perfect sibling vortex of misfortune. Ridhi Dogra and Gaurav Arora exist for some reason — their characters come and go as the plot requires, and they don’t feel like real people.

All this being said, I was thoroughly hooked on this silly show. As I mentioned previously, this is for anyone who loves watching a ton of drama, and despite its terrible storytelling, I was hooked on the insane drama that got more and more unhinged with every passing scene. Was it worth the 4 hours I spent consuming content that is not good and that I will never get back? Probably not. But here we are.

Kull on Hotstar is absolutely atrocious but oh-so entertaining. If you’re in the mood for petty drama that goes from 0-100 within the first few seconds and then floors the gas pedal, this one’s your jam. Just don’t expect anything to make sense.
