Zenshu Episode 5 Recap

This episode stood out from the previous ones, offering a refreshing change of pace. It opens with a glimpse into Natsuko’s past life, where she is once again pushing herself to exhaustion. Her assistant approaches with overdue work, but Natsuko remains unfazed, prioritizing her search for inspiration over deadlines. As we remember, she had been obsessively working on a project about first love, a topic she had no personal experience with. Determined to fill that gap, she relentlessly questions everyone about their first love, urging them to illustrate it, even if they lack artistic skills. At the same time, she isolates herself, insisting she can handle everything alone rather than trusting others with the work.

A similar dynamic plays out in her current fantasy world. Natsuko constantly takes on the burden of fighting enemies and protecting others, soaking in the praise she receives. However, it’s evident that this recognition and reliance on her strength are starting to affect her mindset. Meanwhile, familiar faces reappear, including Destiny, who has finally realized her goal of opening an orphanage.

Natsuko, along with Luke and Unio, is tasked with bringing more children to the orphanage. This leads to an encounter with Justice, a former member of the Nine Soldiers. However, Justice is now a shadow of his former self, spending his days lost in gambling and drinking.

In the previous episode, Natsuko was too confident about her own abilities, and she got the results of it. Not only was she brutally defeated, but her life was also in danger. If it was not for Luke and others, she would have died on the spot. The liquid form of the void was not contained by anyone, and after being unaffected by all the attacks thrown towards it, the void ran straight towards the Soul Future. Now, it has solidified itself to the tower and has completely stopped moving. Every kind of blow to it from the exterior did zero damage to it, and this is the scenario that Natsuko and others are dealing with.

This happened because Natsuko thought that she was enough to handle everything on her own. Just like in her previous life, she believes it would be better if she did the work herself rather than relying on others. This was definitely not the best way to deal with her enemies. This is also why she gets into a fight with Luke, who is frustrated that she does not rely on him or others at all. However, Memmeln finally manages to make her see the flaw in her judgment. Just like how Natsuko wants to protect everyone, the nine soldiers also want to protect Natsuko.

But how can they go up against this evolved version of void when they have no idea how to deal with it? They finally come up with a makeshift plan without knowing whether this will work or not. On top of that, Justice is also feeling the burden of everything, as if he does not do anything, he might actually lose the people close to him. But in doing something, he will have to risk his comrades knowing that he cannot fly anymore.

This episode did follow the usual pattern but, at the same time, was a visual treat to watch. The ending animation where Luke goes up against the void was brilliant and reminded us that we are actually watching a Mappa anime. I also am slowly warming up to the romance that we very steadily get introduced to. It feels natural that Luke is experiencing love in an organic manner.
