Übel Blatt Episode 1 Recap

The plot follows Koinzell, a boy on a mission to confront the seven heroes who once saved the land. However, from the very beginning, it becomes clear that these heroes might actually be the villains of the story. They appear to have stolen the glory from their fallen comrades and are now celebrated as protectors—betrayal and deceit lurk beneath their revered titles, casting doubt on the tales of their heroism. The setting is a brutal world where cruelty rules and the powerful dictate the law, leaving ordinary people to fend for themselves in despair.

Amid this harsh environment, a young girl named Peepi is caught trying to flee her miserable homeland. The monastery controlling access to the empire operates on bribes, executing a corrupt system where only the wealthy can move freely. Those without money are subjected to endless suffering, trapped in their dire circumstances with no way out. It is in this desperate situation that Koinzell steps in to rescue Peepi, taking her under his protection as they attempt to cross the border together.

They are later joined by Weid, another individual attempting to smuggle himself across. However, their journey is filled with challenges, and they face numerous obstacles before even getting close to the border. The head priest is a menace who will not rest until he stops Koinzell from moving forward.

This episode reveals a lot about the past secrets of Koinzell. At first, we see him go against the enigmatic swordsman that the monastery leader contacted. The sword this swordsman carries is a unique one, as a fairy constantly screams from its hilt. Though Koinzell manages to deflect all the attacks, the last attack makes him fall down to the deepest part of the monastery. This is also where he gets separated from Weid’s party, who make their way toward the ship without Koinzell.

Here, we see that Koinzell really cannot catch a break as problems always follow him. Even after falling, the priest does not leave Koinzell alone and comes with some of his strongest warriors called the holy guardian brotherhood. A very interesting thing happens, and we see Koinzell thinking about someone else called Ascheriit. This is the point from where the anime dives into its actual plotline, and many of the things get clear.

Who is actually Koinzell, and what his identity is? Why his mannerisms and powers resemble that of a seasoned and skilled soldier even though he is a child also gets answered here. Not only that, we finally see the reason behind his relentless pursuit of the seven heroes and what he wants from them. It seems that he has a deep history with these heroes and the monastery that keeps everyone from going to the other side.

This episode was very important as it properly explores what the mission is going to be in this anime. Now that we have witnessed his tragic past, we will have a lot more clarity about Koinzell and his intentions.

I liked today’s episode, but, at the same time, I believe that the animation could have been far better. All the essential bits are covered in this anime, however, no one can deny that they cut out a lot from its source material. Hopefully, we will get all the important bits, and it will be enough to keep the soul of the story alive.
