Hound’s Hill Review
There are several things happening at the same time in Netflix’s Polish series Hound’s Hill. Murder, politics and controversies galore, the series is a thrilling and deep dive into disturbing places and it gets straight to the point as soon as it starts. It’s quite slow-paced and in spite of the twists and turns, viewers might find this to drag a bit but overall, there’s a complex narrative that takes its sweet time to weave something worthwhile.
The connection between the different plot points of the series is thoroughly spooky and the series makes it a point to let us know that there’s more to the story than meets the eye. The world-building is done well and will suck you right in. I found myself more and more enchanted by the haunting atmosphere of the series and although it’s a bit slow, it does have important points to say every few minutes, making us sit up and take notice.

The series slowly ups the ante throughout the runtime, but, most importantly, it does so in a believable way. There’s a ton of brutality, but it’s not overdone and neither is it so obviously over-the-top that it’s hilarious. As a result, viewers will relate to the plights of the few in Zybork, where something sinister is at play around every turn. The series constantly emphasises the plights of the characters in this small town and how frustrations can build up over time to result in something devastating.
Thus when Justyna and Mikolaj arrive at the small town, they kick up a lot of dirt that has been lying still thanks to the town’s sleepy residents. Both these characters are important for the plot, which is surprising because they come back to Mikolaj’s hometown and you’d expect him to get the bigger slice of the pie. Justyna, surprisingly, is an almost equal part of the tale and I think it would’ve been impossible to reach the end without her character.

Here, I would also like to mention the fantastic family politics between Mikolaj and his father Tomasz. Other than everything that is taking place outside the family unit, the series also highlights the fraught relationship between the father-son duo that adds another layer of discomfort to the entire thing. As with all family relationships, it’s complex, more so because there’s an unexpected death and a few shocking secrets in the middle of it all.
I think the series does a phenomenal job of creating an atmosphere that is hard to get out of. The eerie background score and the shady characters all come together to create something memorable here. And, again, I do have to say that the first three episodes are used more as a way to create the world instead of trying to solve its problems, but it definitely pays off in the end when it gives us a solution that won’t leave you annoyed. Thus, after waiting for far too long when you finally get all the answers you need, it comes out of nowhere and leaves a very disturbing taste in your mouth. In a way, it also breaks your heart for the innocent people caught up in horrible games of the few. All in all, it’s a very dark, dreary and hopeless situation that translates into a disturbing watch.
Final Thoughts

Hound’s Hill, in a way, makes you lose hope for humanity because it all hits close to home. The entire town of Zybork is shown to be full of opportunists to whom human life doesn’t hold any value. It results in something we see around us nowadays, leaving us feeling hopeless and disturbed by the end of it all. This Polish series is great for those who like a more layered watch and sequences that are grounded in reality.
