Love Your Enemy Episode 1 Recap

The episode begins with Yun Jiwon dreaming about her teenage self, teary-eyed, as someone rushes toward her. She immediately wakes up and gets ready for school, where she works as the homeroom teacher at the same school she attended as a student. The scene juxtaposes the adult Yun Jiwon with her younger self, showing how her bubbly personality remains unchanged. The story shifts to her grandfather, Yun Jae-ho, who is worried about Seok E&C, a company trying to take over the school—something he believes should be handled by his own company.

Next, we’re introduced to Seok Gyeong-tae, the chairman of Seok E&C, founded by his father, Seok Ban-hee. A flashback reveals Ban-hee and Jae-ho fighting over a woman, sparking the rivalry between their families. Ban-hee emerged victorious, leading to a feud that persists across generations. Determined to avenge his father, Gyeong-tae plans to take over the school, turn it into a golf course, and provoke Jae-ho further. Meanwhile, we learn that Gyeong-tae’s son, Seok Jiwon, is working on a project in Dubai. Though Gyeong-tae wants his son to spearhead the school takeover, his employee, Dong-jin, has other plans.

When Dong-jin attends an interview for “Best Businessman of the Year,” Seok Jiwon makes a sudden appearance, shocking him. Jiwon confronts Dong-jin with evidence of his fraudulent dealings in the cement business. Despite Dong-jin’s pleas for forgiveness, Jiwon walks away. The scene then transitions to a meeting where the school officials vote to select Seok E&C as the school’s new owner. Gyeong-tae attends, further enraging Jae-ho, who collapses during the meeting, leaving Gyeong-tae shocked.

At the school, staff members discuss Seok Jiwon and Yun Jiwon, speculating who would make a better chairman. Ji-hye, a staff member and Yun Jiwon’s old school friend, subtly supports Seok Jiwon, leading her colleague and Yun Jiwon’s best friend, Su-a, to sarcastically question her loyalty. Tae-o gestures for Su-a to meet him outside, handing her a drink to give to Yun Jiwon out of concern. When Su-a delivers the drink and mentions Tae-o, Yun Jiwon remains indifferent, hinting at a history between them. Suddenly, an ambulance arrives, and Yun Jiwon looks on anxiously.
At home, Gyeong-tae continues ranting about Jae-ho but greets his son warmly when Seok Jiwon arrives. However, when Gyeong-tae insists that Jiwon take over the school, Jiwon refuses, unwilling to participate in his father’s vengeful schemes. Meanwhile, Yun Jiwon comforts her grandfather and suggests they move to Seoul, where she could find another teaching job, but Jae-ho resolutely refuses to leave their hometown.

Later, Seok Jiwon visits a pub to meet old school friends. When Hyung-jae mentions Yun Jiwon, Seok Jiwon feigns ignorance. Hyung-jae reveals that Yun Jiwon also claims not to remember him, leaving Jiwon visibly irritated. Frustrated, Jiwon leaves the bar, returns home, and announces to his parents that he will take over the school after all. At the same time, Yun Jiwon confides in Su-a about her deep dislike for Seok Jiwon. A flashback reveals how their rivalry escalated during school, with Yun Jiwon often outshining Jiwon. Su-a teases that their relationship might be one of “hate turned to love,” but Yun Jiwon vehemently denies it.
Resolving to stay at the school and fight Jiwon, she prepares for the coming battle. The next morning, Yun Jiwon has the same dream but wakes up sick. Her day worsens as she loses her contact lens and has to wear glasses, which later break when she’s hit by a basketball. Blurry-eyed, she wanders the school and unknowingly passes Seok Jiwon, bowing politely. Jiwon, feeling slighted that she doesn’t recognize him, becomes furious. As he stews over this perceived insult, the episode transitions to their teenage years.

In the flashback, their bickering takes center stage until Seok Jiwon begins seeing Yun Jiwon differently. When Yun Jiwon’s junior, Mun-su, flirts with her, Jiwon becomes irrationally angry. Later, upon hearing that Yun Jiwon rejected Mun-su, he feels oddly relieved. Amid their rivalry, Yun Jiwon and Seok Jiwon make a bet before midterms: if she wins, he must call her “noona” (an honorific for an older sister), while he demands she date him if he wins. Yun Jiwon wins the bet, much to Jiwon’s frustration, and the flashback ends with a hint of unspoken feelings between them.

Back in the present, Yun Jiwon naps in the staffroom, sick and dreaming of her younger self reaching for Seok Jiwon. Suddenly, Jiwon arrives, waking her up and introducing himself as the new chairman. Startled, Yun Jiwon’s blurry vision clears as she recognizes him. A comparison of her teenage self touching his face and her adult self pinching his cheeks underscores that, despite the years, their fiery dynamic remains as intense as ever. The episode ends with a mix of humor and nostalgia, teasing the beginning of a new chapter in their rivalry.

Love Your Enemy Episode 1 Review
The episode seamlessly blends flashbacks with present-day scenes, creating a compelling flow that highlights the dynamic between the lead characters. Sharing the same name and rooted in a generations-old family rivalry, Seok Jiwon and Yun Jiwon’s fiery relationship hints at a complex romantic history. The show cleverly sets up a “Romeo and Juliet” style family feud, but with an added dose of humor and lighthearted storytelling. The initial cameo by Bae Hyeon Seong and Moon Sang Min as the young Seok Ban-hee and Yun Jae-ho is a standout moment, featuring a hilariously over-the-top action sequence tied to their petty feud, setting a playful yet engaging tone for the series.

The character dynamics add depth to the narrative, with Ji-hye emerging as an intriguing figure. Despite being Yun Jiwon’s friend, her apparent affection for Seok Jiwon seems to fuel an underlying resentment toward Yun Jiwon, foreshadowing potential tension as the story progresses. Meanwhile, Mun-su’s anticipated return as an adult vying for Yun Jiwon’s affection promises to further complicate the relationship between the two leads. The episode balances humor, nostalgia, and hints of drama, offering an engaging start to what promises to be a heartwarming and entertaining series.
