The Origin Madam Koi-Koi Episode 1 Review

In Nigeria, several popular myths have endured for many decades. One such legend is the tale of Madam Koi Koi. The exact origins of this story remain unknown, but the haunting tale of a female ghost teacher wearing red high heels has persisted in Nigerian boarding schools for generations. And the director has finally decided to bring this story to life with this series.

The series is divided into two chapters. The first chapter focuses on how the evil spirit Avakin returned after 20 years. The story begins at a boarding school where one of the girls is abused by some of the boys. When she complains to the principal, he doesn’t believe her because the boys are scholars and bring some pride to the college. On the same night, one of the boys is killed, and his body is found in the jungle with his face completely destroyed.

The series is scary in a different way, as it doesn’t reveal much about the ghost in this part so the horror fact is very less. However, the visual of the girl being raped is horrifying and quite disturbing. What’s even more disturbing is when the principal doesn’t believe her and even blames her for everything that has happened. The story focuses more on showing each and every character in this part, and we can expect even more horror in the next episode.

However, in the first chapter, the series struggles when it comes to weaving a narrative that truly embraces the depth and complexity of the Madam Koi-Koi myth. Most of the cast did a decent job of portraying the characters and building a connection with the audience. Unfortunately, the show falls short of providing these characters with the development and depth needed to make their connections to Madam Koi-Koi feel authentic and emotionally resonant. It remains unclear why Amanda is the one experiencing the nightmares and what the exact reason for it is. However, since there is one more episode, there is a chance that it will be revealed in the next chapter.

The character of Mother Superior, played by Iretiola Doyle, will make your blood boil with the way she speaks and how she is solely concerned about the school and the students. It will make you wish that the evil spirit kills her first, but that is how I felt. However, that also attests to her good acting.

Additionally, incorporating more shock value and frightening scenes would have heightened the intrigue of this series. It was only in the last five minutes that it revealed the reason and origin of it all. However, the clarity of how it was awakened, linked to the abuse of the girl, wasn’t fully apparent until the ending. The original folklore is steeped in themes of supernatural retribution, guilt, and the consequences of one’s actions. While these elements are present in the show, they are not explored with the depth and subtlety that would have elevated the narrative to a more profound and resonant level.

In terms of storytelling, this chapter treads familiar ground, addressing how everything was connected to the boarding school and the original myth. However, if the show had fewer disturbing visuals of abuse and more horror elements, it would have stood out in this genre. Anyway, the show ended in a way that will leave you curious about what will happen in the next chapter.

The Origin Madam Koi-Koi Chapter 1 The Awakening Review: Final Thoughts

The Origin Madam Koi-Koi Episode 1 Review

The Origin: Madam Koi-Koi Chapter 1: The Awakening offers a commendable effort in bringing to life the enduring Nigerian legend of Madam Koi-Koi. With a talented ensemble cast, the series introduces viewers to a dark, haunting world within a boarding school, setting the stage for a supernatural reckoning. While the initial chapter lays the foundation for the story’s resurgence of evil, it falls short of fully immersing viewers in the complexities of the myth.

Nonetheless, the chapter concludes with a tantalizing cliffhanger, leaving audiences eager to delve deeper into this chilling narrative in the upcoming instalment. As the story unfolds, there remains hope for a more profound and emotionally resonant connection to the iconic Madam Koi-Koi legend.

  1. I am not a fan or the horror genre, but I decided to watch this because it is Nollywood, you I don’t understand the bit about it having mediocre horror.

I was scared and couldn’t finish it in one sitting (which is strange)

So maybe my inexperience in this genre affected my judgement, but anything more than this could have killed me ????????

For all asking the next chapter/episode is coming out on the 7th of November, 2023
