MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 6 Review: After anticipating for months, the show premiered its fifteenth season with wonderful home cooks ready to win the grand title. On the judge’s panel, we have the previous season’s professional chefs, Andy Allen, Melissa Leong, and late Jock Zonfrillo, back on the set to taste and deliver excellent critics. Surprisingly, it doesn’t stop with them because other professionals like Jamie Oliver will also be making cameos to test the contestants with their best.
The participating contestants are Adi Nevgi, Alice Han, Amy Tanner, Andrea Puglisi, Antonio Cruz Vaamonde, Brent Draper, Cath Collins, Declan Cleary, Grace Jupp, Jessica Perri, Larissa Sewell, Malissa Fedele, Phil Conway, Ralph Kahango, Rhiannon Anderson, Robbie Cooper, Rue Mupedzi and Theo Loizou.

In the previous elimination episode, only 9 contestants took part in the elimination round due to the rest of them being affected by Covid. Unfortunately, two more contestants also fell sick, which made only 7 contestants to participate in the 15th season’s first mystery box challenge. While conducting the show without the entire team especially having an elimination round, feels harsh, the show must go on. However, is the win fair?
In today’s episode, MasterChef Australia’s first season fame Poh Ling Yeow visited. She was given the responsibility of setting up the mystery box ingredient. The 7 participants couldn’t control their excitement as soon as they saw Poh since she’s an excellent chef with plenty of records. Poh gave the participants a word of advice on how to make use of every minute of the competition before asking the contestants to check their items.

When the contestants lifted their mystery box, all they saw were pantry staples. Since Poh is an expert baker, she decided to check how well the contestants prepare a dish using the given item. Before the timer started, Poh introduced her lime cloud cake which she made with the same staples and a lime. Hence, the contestants have to impress the judges using pantry staples and two other ingredients of their choice. The 75 minutes timer started, and the cooks rushed to take their ingredients.
Every contestant had a different idea and didn’t stick to just desserts. Some planned to make pasta and some desserts. While the cooks were preparing, the judges checked upon them, gave their input, and also added some suggestions. This pushed the contestants to try out something different to enhance the flavours.

Certain contestants kept it chill and pulled their dishes together, but some of them missed out on their flavours. Notably, Phil wasn’t satisfied with his ice cream because all he could taste was the smoke. Anyway, they all brilliantly wrapped up their dishes and presented them to the judges. Most of the contestants received good feedback except Phil since his brownie with ice cream didn’t go well.
The two dishes that touched the judges were of Grace’s and Malissa’s. Grace chose the savoury direction while Malissa stood with a dessert. Since Malissa’s dish was outstanding, she was selected for the upcoming immunity pin challenge round. This is a second for Malissa because the last time when she got in, she indeed won the immunity pin. Will she nail it again? That will remain a mystery until the episode airs.
MasterChef Australia Season 15 Episode 6 Review: Final Thoughts
I kind of felt that Grace could have won the episode if only the judges did not taste her dish while speculating her. The judges tend to taste the contestants’ dishes during preparation to give suggestions. However, Grace’s savoury waffle was completely done when the judges tried it, so during her presentation, obviously, the first-time feel wouldn’t have been there when they tasted it again. This could be a reason why she didn’t make it to the immunity pin round.

Malissa’s dish was definitely good as well and she deserved the win. However, the judges could have put through both Grace and Malissa.
