Crimes Aaj Kal Episode 5titled ‘The Trap,’ narrates the hazard of fake social media IDs and the criminal masterplans behind them. The crime show hosted by Vikrant Massey and directed by Subbu Iyer, like Anup Soni’s Crime Patrol, dives into the criminal world where teenagers and young adults become culprits for various reasons. The Amazon miniTV series dropped the fifth episode on April 7, 2023, and every Friday, it will premiere one episode.

The series focus on real crime incidents and, with the help of actors, shows the chilling cases visually to the audience. With gore and violence packed, Crimes Aaj Kal focuses on bringing to light the backstory of the culprits and where things went wrong. The official description of the series reads,

THE SERIES IS A HOST DRIVEN ANTHOLOGY- FEATURING CASES- OF CRIMES- WHERE IN THE YOUTH- TEENAGE TO YOUNG ADULTS ARE INVOLVED. CASES WHERE THE YOUTH- WHETHER IT BE VICTIM OR THE PERPETRATOR- HAVE ENTERED INTO A ZONE OF “DEAD END” BY GIVING WINGS TO THEIR ANGER, RAGE, EMOTIONS OF JEALOUSY, GREED- WITH THE INTENTION OF INSTANT GRATIFICATION. Produced by Vipul D. Shah’s Optymstix Media, each episode features a different crime story where the truth will be unraveled only at the end. Vikrant Massey starts and ends the episodes with an open-end introduction and a final moral message to take home. Some cast members are Shailendra Yadav, Praveen Gaur, Bushra Shaikh, Sejal Jaiswal, Jay Malhotra, Vikas Parekh, Narasimhaa, Darshan Dave, Mohit Duseja, Simran Tomar, and more.

The episode starts with Vikrant Massey receiving a friend request from a woman, making it the upcoming story’s main theme. Following this, we’re driven into the story where the police, along with a woman called Natasha, watch CCTV footage of a man named Anuj, who looks extremely disturbed before going to his home and ending his life. Police wind up the case stating that it is a suicide, but his fiancee Natasha pressures that there is an underlying cause.

We’re then shown Anuj and Natasha having their best days in the past to help the viewers analyze whether Natasha is acting or is indeed sad about the demise of Anuj. Moving on, three colleagues of Anuj then discuss privately how they didn’t expect the latter would die by suicide. This raises curiosity as to why these three are involved with Anuj’s death.

When Natasha tries to fix pieces, her father convinces her to return to Mumbai since no matter what she tries, Anuj is not going to come back. However, she is persistent in finding the cause behind his death. Then, Natasha gets a call from one of Anuj’s colleagues, Jaydeep. It is revealed that all three colleagues have transferred money to Anuj because he had something to sort out. Anuj’s parents deny his actions, for they express that he had no need to borrow such hefty amounts when he has been earning well.

The police try to navigate the transferred money and find out that Anuj has wired cash to four different accounts. On tracing the account holders, the police arrive at a location where young teenagers are used to creating fake accounts and reaching out to guys. The cops arrest some of the main culprits to receive the whole story.

Apparently, Anuj has received a friend request from a fake ID called Sonia which he thought is a real person. After constantly texting for days, he joins a video call with her and becomes nasty. In reality, the video of Sonia is pre-recorded, and Anuj, who is unaware of it, encounters the sexual call. The criminal, Sadiq, then records this video. Sadiq then sends the video to Anuj and threatens to give him money.

Anuj’s money exhausts, and he decides to end his life. After knowing this truth, Natasha breaks down, and the episode ends with Vikrant Massey’s note on fake IDs and social media.

It is sad that there are people who fall prey to fake IDs despite so much awareness being put up. The episode marks the importance of being aware of the Internet’s dark side and how having sexual stuff through video calls can end up terrible. I mean, why do you want to exchange vulnerable stuff online? Hopefully, youngsters evade these traps because phishers are increasing way too much. Stay safe!
