-My Name Is Mo’Nique Review Contains No Spoilers-
The comedian shares extremely intimate stories about her life in the latest stand-up. Through comedy, she takes us on a journey across various phases and experiences that made her the person she is today. The comedy special is her ultimate comeback after getting pushed down by life and ending up at her lowest. This show was to prove that she still has a lot of fights left in her and is ready to come back into the business.
Starting off which talking about the time she was enrolled in a special class due to her mother being unable to read. She shared her life-changing experience and the friends that she made along the way. Besides sharing her story, she also points out the blatant racism that existed. Moreover, she also talks about the discrimination that a special needs child faces from teachers and fellow students.
Moving onto a more intimate phase of her life, her youth. She shares stories about explicit sexual encounters and how they put her into a lot of trouble. Mostly it stemmed from the lack of sex education and conversation with adults. With light-hearted jokes, she walks us through a road where she was devoid of normal and healthy conversations which adults.

Mo’Nique is an excellent storyteller and switches her mannerisms with the shift of tone. She showed off her loud and fun self while sharing a funny story and seamlessly changed to a more serious and sophisticated self while sharing a meaningful account. Her back and forth during the entire show was not only entertaining but a unique experience. Additionally, she was able to connect with the audience who shared similar experiences as her.
However, the last segment turned into a heartfelt revelation rather than a comedic bit. She shared how she has had a secret her entire life, unable to reveal it to anyone due to the preconceived notions that society holds. But she was able to share her burden with her husband, who gave her strength and support each step of the way. The simple gesture helped her to become her true self and share it with the audience and the world.
Nevertheless, even though the show was entertaining, it felt much like a Ted Talk rather than a stand-up comedy show. The less amount of jokes and punchlines made the script stale. The focus was mainly put on sharing her experiences, but those were not universal in nature, which created a clear disconnect with the viewers. At times some of the stories felt too personal and might make some uncomfortable.
Mo’Nique: My Name Is Mo’Nique Review: Final Thoughts
The show is entertaining and filled with energy. The comedian is able to fill the room with energy and rile up the audience as she pleases. As soon as she stepped on the stage, she had total command over the room, and no one could escape her powerful presence. However, the script was a letdown, even if the stories had a lot of heart in them. It lacked punchlines, but the accounts were meaningful. One can definitely watch the show to know the artist better and live the experiences of a strong woman of colour.

The show was boring. All the cursing, saying nigga over and over, all the hollering. Her storylines and her bragging she a boss. Didn’t laugh one time. Stories were not relatable.
I agree wasn’t funny At all.
I agree 100% with this statement.
I agree!!!…TO to to much profanity. Can she tell ONE joke without God damn, muthafucka, nigga, nigga, nigga!!….OMG!!
Your comment kinda reveals the same.
just saying …
Not sure who her writers are or if she even has them but this special was not special AT ALL! Too much cursing, storyline were not funny. Feel like it could have been so much better. Disappointed to say the least. No substance.
Not good! Sorry Monique, I only liked her in the Queen of Comedy special…
I could very much relate. I thought it was funny even though I didn’t laugh all the way through. It left me wanting more. I wish this was more of a comedy documentary. I wanted to hear more about her life. I enjoyed it.
don’t know why ppl always want to hear about other peoples’ personal lives. I have no idea what you would get out of that. Unless there were some interesting unique situations or whatever. But just how “Mo’nique” grew up? Nah, not that important to me. And you really have no problem with all the profanity? I have no prob with profanity and even I had to give up after about 15mins or so. Jeeez. I don’t know any other comedian that curses that much. It’s kinda like she is nervous or sumn and thinks that she needs to punctuate EVERY joke with a bombardment of curses and n**gas and whatnot. Waaay too much swearing for such a small payoff. Jokes were ok but “my mf’n mother opened up the b*tch *ss mf’n letter with her mf’n god damned hands, b*tch!” (sigh) ugggh! smh Just overkill for the sake of overkill. HARD pass for me.
I second that Darius. The profanity was over the top an to the extreme unnecessary. I toughened my way to 15mins before turning it off.
Awesome stand up Monique is the best I has seen in a long time. I will pay for Monique anytime and all the time
YIKES!!
You are way too easily entertained. I laughed once… and I was surprised I did.
I LOVED THE TRUTH AS WE BLACK WOMEN Where RAISED TO BE STRONG AND DURABLE. BUT IT WAS GENERATIONAL CURSES. LOVE THE SHOW .
Can we tell a joke without the profanity? I couldn’t get past that.
right? I love Chappelle, Lous C. K., Richard, Eddie, etc. This is the first time that a comedian’s cursing made me cringe. I mean how many curse words do you want to fit into one sentence. Does she think THAT makes her more funny? More bold? More provacative? pfft! HARD pass for me. Ppl want to be supportive but man, call it what it is. She wasn’t THAT funny and all the cursing did NOT make up for anything and didn’t add to but rather subtracted from the performance. I gave up after about 15mins or so. My ears couldn’t take any more useless cursing. ridiculous. I don’t know any other comedian that curses that much. It’s kinda like she is nervous or sumn and thinks that she needs to punctuate EVERY joke with a bombardment of curses and n**gas and whatnot. Waaay too much swearing for such a small payoff. Jokes were ok I guess but basically sh*t like, “my mf’n mother opened up the b*tch *ss mf’n letter with her mf’n god damned hands, b*tch!” (sigh) ugggh! smh Just overkill for the sake of overkill. HARD pass for me.
Dave Chapelle, Bernie Mac, Richard and Eddie and Mo’Nique all have one thing in common, they all use profanity, y’all don’t like Mo’Nique simply because she’s a woman, who went on her own path of doing comedy in this show and if you’re a true fan of this genre you will know most comedians tells stories and if you cant story tell but just makes jokes its not entertaining even Dave Chapelle tell stories, Bernie Mac If you don’t know what I am talking about please rewatch all the comedians you mentioned. Again all of the negativity using to many cuss words is ridiculous she’s been since the 90s never change. Where’s the negativity toward Richard Pryor, Bernie Mac, especially Dave Chappelle at? Double standards 2023 get over it, stop hating.
Thanks for confirming that she hasn’t been funny in ANY decade since the 90s.
Exactly ????
This comedy was not funn! It was completely disappointing and I expected more.
I like Mo’nique, I support her career, I commend her for standing up for herself- but Netflix or whoever had issue with her comedy, this is proof why. Felt like a testimony with an over abundance of curse words. Not funny. I felt like this wasn’t even needed. She looks great. Her energy was amazing. However, her jokes were just not funny at all. Learned about her life more, but I don’t think that was necessary either. Make me laugh. That’s what you’re supposed to do. To those that like it, cool, but this just disappointed for most part.
Just watched Monique’s Netflix special, I am a big fan of hers, but her special did not make me laugh not one time. It took forever to tell her grade school story that I forgot I was listening . I really was expecting some knee slapping story telling but I didn’t get that at all. The cursing made up for the lack of jokes she had, it was way too much cursing and using the, N word over and over again. I will continue to support her, and I am still a big fan, and happy to see her making a comeback.
I simply loved everything Monique had to say. She is a beautiful woman and a wonderful woman of class. She touched on things that reality is scared to say and be honest about. I Love her and her truth which she candidly spoke about. Well Done Queen????????
Terrible and not funny. Hate that Netflix caved and gave her a platform to rant. Not entertaining at all. Please Netflix pass on her for any future projects.
This special is terrible. Just tried to watch it and had to turn it off after 33 minutes in…..I haven’t laughed once and tired of all the cursing! I curse at times but every other word she says is MF, GD, NIGGA and every other distasteful word she could think of! It’s not funny or cute!
I enjoyed it. Yes she cursed alot but that’s who she is.
I’m sorry Monique is not funny to me at all, she should stick to acting.
After listening to her “comedy special”. . .I had to take my ears down to the precinct for a rape kit! All of that cussin’ was an assault. Try being funny. Mo’Nique is an excellent actress and a HORRIBLE comedienne.
Really a Rapekit? In most counties and cities those on are backorder and could help ensure a victim is safe from.harm
Your joke and comparison is not only distasteful and disgusting but just plain off
You want attention so bad …????????????
If Mo’Nique were Albino, she wouldn’t know how to lighten up. She’s just an angry, UNfunny, bitter, Z-list comedienne with a svengali as her husbanager. Her saving grace is that she’s an exceptional actress. She should give up trying to be a comedienne because you have to be kind of funny. She’s not funny AT ALL!!! Pauly Shore is funnier than her!
Halfway through, I thought maybe I had accidentally logged into a Zoom call with Mo’Nique and her psychiatrist. Netflix should put a STOP PAYMENT on her check!
At least Wendy Williams can use crack and alcohol as an excuse for letting her husband sleep with other women, rob her blind, and ruin her career. I guess Mo’Nique will have to find a smorgasbord.
All of those cuss words were just filler. She told Netflix she had 76 minutes of brilliantly funny material. When she realized she only had 10 minutes of “knock-knock” jokes, she resorted to loud, classless, vulgar cussin’! Just lazy! You’re right. . .you’re no Chapelle, Rock or Schumer! I laughed so hard throughout all of their Comedy Specials.
Pros: Monique looked amazing, from head to toe, hair, skin, dress and shoes. She was stunning. It was definitely good to see her on stage again.
Overall I chuckled twice, this is not a stomach hurt of laughter type of show, it was more of a stance, like announcing of her comeback on a major platform. I hope she comes back with another show with more laughable punchlines in the near future.
She should not receive millions for that amateur BS! Next time?! Uh, the Apollo would’ve given her the hook!
Monique has cursed from the beginning. Listen do not watch her if you have problem with her cursing and saying nigga. She is the star and she cn say whatever she wants to say! I love Monique and her realness! I am cheering her on!! We scorpions are straight up and sometimes we just do not have any filter! If you’re sensitive Comedy is not for you! Richard Pryor cursed a lot! I loved his stand ups too! Social media is a place that people hide behind their technology and bully and argue! Life is too short for miserable people! Congratulations Monique!
Does anyone remember that old song. . .”Talking Loud, and Saying Nothing”?! THAT is Mo’Nique in a nutshell. She’s no Richard Pryor. Everyone defending that UNfunny mess needs to take the time to extract the cuss words in her act and see what they’re left with. NOTHING!!! She’s a lazy comedian. I wouldn’t pay money to hear her bitch about her fucked up life and who did her wrong. I like to laugh when I go to a comedy show. Netflix got bamboozled!
I thought the “My Name is Monique” Netflix special was absolutely awful. With all the profanity and “N” words she constantly used, one could not find any substance or punchlines in her jokes. In fact she was simply telling a story about her life. She lacked depth and humor in her delivery. Frankly speaking,
you saw her limited vocabulary and ignorance highlighted. If Monique continues to pursue comedy, I recommend she work with some comedians that can help her develop her craft. Netflix was correct in offering her $500k. Personally, after seeing her performance that offer was way to much. This is my complete and unbiased opinion. I wish Monique well.
I’ve always said that of all the female comedians, Monique was my least favorite. Her latest stand up confirmed my assessment. I’m really not sure why the crowd “pretended “to enjoy her spot.
I watched the special and although I adore
Monique, I can’t believe how much profanity was used! It was brutal. I cringed listening to all the MFs and N words throw around. Literally every other word was a curse word and that is no exaggeration. You can still be funny and edgy without excessive use of profanity. And to top it off, she wasn’t really that funny tbh.
i dont mind edgy comedians i dont mind cursing if theres context but 76 minutes every word i wanted to like her stories but not w mf and n.. a every 2 seconds or bitchhh
The performance sucked so badly… we quit watching it… too much cursing, too much n words and not enough jokes… the build up to her jokes took way to long… so long I fell asleep during a few of them… now we know why Netflix didn’t want to pay her all of those millions she wanted… she sucks…
Too much cursing too much Nigga she blew it wit dis one.
My mom made me sit through this mess because she was crazy enough to do so by herself. Lol hope she is happy now Netflix knows that they would have clearly overpaid her with the 500k originally. She was the worst in the Queens of Comedy…long winded, high horse jokes. My undiagnosed ADHD kicked in and I went to wash dishes and vacuum my floors only too realize she was still telling the same joke that seemed to never end. I cancelled my Netflix but not for Monique.
Highly disappointed in the excessive profanity and lack of humor. Had to stop watching after 30 minutes.
This was terrible very horrible… it’s was no punch line at all.. but her dress was fabulous..
That’s been Mo for the 25 years. She did was us know the to do. Her????????♂️
“she did was us know the to do”? If you say so.
Mo’s tombstone is going to read: “Nigga, Bitch, Mutha Fucka!” And, that sums her up perfectly.
I lasted through this show 5 mins. The countless ‘my niggas’ and ‘m*f*er’ comments were unnecessary and coming from a middle aged women were tacky.
Omg that was str8 amateur can’t believe she suppose to be a superstar. Retire trash can’t even think of the words garbage waste of time wow. Probably corniest standup ever…..
I’m sorry. I am no saint and I tell jokes but no professional comedian and have people laughing non stop while using some profanity. BUT Monique was EXTREMELY difficult to watch and laugh. No humor in this one. Sorry
This stand up was TRASH!!! After all the complaining about Netflix she gets her special and seem like she was just unprepared and wingin it. Makin it up as she went along. Terrible
