Citadel: Priyanka Chopra On How the Show’s Concept of ‘True Diversity’ Drew to Her

Sitting down for a surprise press show in Mumbai, Priyanka Chopra and Richard Madden opened up about their upcoming Amazon Prime Video Original TV series Citadel. Premiering on the OTT platform this month, the show has been created by Josh Appelbaum and Bryan Oh, with the Russo Brothers stepping in as its executive producers.

Chopra and Madden pose as the leading pair of the American action thriller series, alongside Stanley Tucci, Ashleigh Cummings and others. On April 3, Monday, the titular pair cleared the air around their show that is set to commence a new age for espionage on TV. The sci-fi series has been renewed for a second season, even before the first season’s premiere. Moreover, the American iteration will also give way to local spin-offs, with the Indian and Italian renditions already having been announced.

Since the series is built from the ground up on the foundation of diversity by spanning across continents, this diverse representation of inclusivity makes it a force to reckon with. The Indian actress, who’s now turned into a renowned Hollywood name as well, made a comment on the similar ground as to what led her to join this massive grand-scale franchise in the first place.

On being asked whether she waited out a while to ponder over her decision to join the ambitious project or not, and what actually pushed her to say the final Yes, Priyanka dealt out a clear and straightforward answer.

First addressing the bit about whether there was a “waiting” or “thinking” period before she said yes, Priyanka begins, “Not for me. I was very clear. This conversation started about five years ago and it’s taken that long because the show is extremely ambitious and there was a lot of development that happened but what was presented to me by Jennifer Salke, the Head of Amazon Studios, was that she wanted to create an international, global franchise, which is an original IP, which truly connects the world.”

This eventually led her to expound on the matter of diversity as she added, “So when we talk about diversity, Amazon is very much about diversity, and true diversity is represented internationally, not just with having different skin tones but hearing the way people speak, actually delving into culture, and this show has the incredible ability to span across every country, every continent. So, I didn’t even know the story, and I was like, ‘Yep, doing it!'”.
