Noise (2023) Ending Explained

Noise (2023)

In the end, Liv finds Matt in a backroom, having dug up the entire floor and now drowning in the water after bursting a pipe. He is adamant about “getting the bodies of the victims” out, and Liv desperately tries to talk some sense into him. After he dives in without paying heed to his girlfriend, Liv goes down after him, only for Pol to save her after she resurfaces. They then struggle to get Matt out, who seems to have given up until Pol lovingly calls him ‘son’ while straining to get him out.

However, the question remains – was Matt haunted by the supernatural? Well, no. What actually happened was that Matt’s mother, Michelle, after his birth, suffered from some serious mental health issues that went unchecked, thanks to Pol not paying enough attention to his wife and son. This resulted in her executing a murder-suicide with his son in their lake, which she was almost successful in doing, but Pol rescued his infant. Unfortunately, his wife wasn’t that lucky.

Noise (2023) ending explained

Either way, this resulted in young Matt having deep-seated issues that only surfaced after the birth of his own son. Julius’s crying triggered something in him that pushed him over the edge, and he started acting more and more erratic. Thankfully, this time around, Liv was there to understand that something was very wrong with her husband, and he was thus, with the help of those closest to him, he was able to stop himself from drowning completely.

Were the ghosts that Matt was seeing actually there? No, there were no ghosts. We don’t even know if Matt was simply reading too much into everything in order to get his father’s approval or simply hallucinating, or both, but Matt’s fragile mental health latched on to this horrible tragedy maybe because the incident that he went through as an infant was bubbling through.

Either way, there were no ghosts.
