-The Magician’s Elephant Review Contains No Spoilers-
The story is simple, a little boy in search of his lost sister, who he still believes exists, despite everyone telling him that she is dead. “Nothing is impossible” is the major theme surrounding the plot. One fine day a fortune teller shares that Peter needs to find an elephant to reach his sister, and the very next day, one appears. However, he does not easily get to take away the elephant with him. The amused king presents three impossible tasks that Peter needs to complete before he can seek the elephant’s help.
The progression of the story is fast-paced and it wastes no time in presenting the main characters of the story. However, due to that, the plot lacks a proper backstory which creates a disconnect with the audience. We understand why magic “disappears” from the town but not how the reason impacted the citizens enough to give up on a sacred practice entirely. It continuously attempted to portray a magical picture, yet even though it managed to come through visually, it failed to create relatability.

Nevertheless, a few scenes and instances were beautifully crafted that managed to give us an immersive experience. Animation plays a huge role in elevating the storytelling process. The characters are designed in a detailed process, especially the elephant, which almost looks life-like and magnificent. A mesmerising dream sequence is definitely the highlight of the movie, as it provides a closer look at the animal’s life.
The ensemble of talented voice actors successfully brought the characters to life. Noah Jupe did a fantastic job at portraying a helpless, and desperate young boy determined to do the impossible. Benedict Wong beautifully voiced the Magician and displayed the loneliness and disappointment that the character has to go through. A retired and grumpy soldier, played by Mandy Patinkin, will stay with one for days.
The message of the story was clear and precise; however, it lacked depth. Often times it seemed superficial and did not do the terrific children’s book justice. The emotions that it wanted to display did not come through the film. Even the intricate animation consisting of breathtaking segments was not enough to salvage the plotline.
The Magician’s Elephant Review: Final Thoughts
With a straightforward story and an uncomplicated message, the movie is effortlessly understood. The animation is a visual spectacle and will manage to entertain you throughout. However, the plot is nothing extraordinary and does not require much attention. Nevertheless, it is enjoyable and perfectly suitable for the target audience. If you want to immerse yourself in a joyful experience during leisure, this is the right pick for you.
