Luther The Fallen Sun is an action thriller film directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross. The film is a direct continuation of the TV series Luther and stars Idris Elba in the lead role of DCI John Luther. Moreover, the film has a total runtime of 129 minutes.
Notably, the film is edited by Justine Wright while Larry Smith serves as cinematographer. Furthermore, it stars Cynthia Erivo, Dermot Crowley, Andy Serkis and others in titular roles.
The synopsis of the film reads as
DCI John Luther finds himself in a plethora of unfortunate events after a psycho serial killer goes on an untamed killing spree in the streets of London.
This solid action thriller starts with John Luther picking up a case of a psycho serial killer, responsible for the murder of a city banker who went missing for several years. Assisted by his trustee associate and former boss, Martin Schenk, Luther begins to examine the intricacies of the murder. And learns that the case might fit his profile of the “hardcore detective” who decides to solve all signs of the menace and put a complete end to its perpetrator.
However, this time around, the criminal and adversary David Robey (played by Andy Serkis) decides to plan a few steps ahead of the detective and gets an edge in this cat-and-mouse game. The cyber killer uses his leverage to frame John Luther on multiple charges and sends him behind the bars for a hefty period of time. Something which leaves the space for him to wreak havoc on the innocents of the city.
Much true to its predecessor, the series sticks to its strong points, and never fails to leave the area of expertise. Moreover, the gritty tone of Idris Elba’s titular character peaks out into this spiritual successor of the franchise that doesn’t choke out like the league of Franchises continuations. Right from the word go, the film channels the element of intrigue and never leaves it midway.
Although there is a corny element attached to the narrative of the film, nothing feels mundane or repetitive. The entire conventional store of action pieces, and thrilling encounters work in the most perfect sense, and sets the stage for a boiling detective thriller.

On the performance front, no one gets enough time to shine in comparison with Idris Elba and Andy Serkis. The film solely stands on the shoulders of its protagonist and antagonist and rightly so. It doesn’t pretend to be a high-profile chase thriller, but rather a treat for the fans of the Luther Saga, which is crystal clear in its objective.
The classic climatic upper hand monologue from Elba feels refreshing, to say the least. Even though it’s a pretty formulaic end, there is nothing to dislike about the fulfilling action thriller (also counting the penultimate yet forthcoming twist ).
Luther The Fallen Sun Final Thoughts

If you are on the lookout for some crispy detective saga (that works even if you aren’t familiar with the Luther franchise), then Idris Elba packing some strong punches never disappoints. Moreover, watch it for Andy Serkis and his brilliant rendition of the cyber-criminal.
