Story of Things Review: Meticulous Tale of Human Emotions

Story of Things is a Tamil language anthological drama series centred around different stories of human emotions and their relationships with paranormal objects. The series is created by George K Antoney and stars Vinoth Kishan, Anshita Anand, and Ritika Singh in the lead roles.

Each episode of this meticulous series is based on a paranormal object (malfunctioning AC, Cellular phone, Weighing scale etc) and its direct connection with the story’s protagonist. Moreover, we also get to see a humane story in every instalment, where hardcore emotions like guilt, greed and isolation play a key role in the show’s trajectory.

For instance, the first episode focuses on an emerging model cum actor, who finds himself in a state of guilt after a road accident and ends up in a spiral of destruction. The episode itself highlights the burden of culpability, and its toll on a human being, with the help of an eccentric weighing scale (even though it’s the least haunting object in the entire show).

Furthermore, this instalment in particular forms the peak point of the show, which then becomes a slightly repetitive structure that doesn’t create new intrigue. I felt like the idea behind each anthology is amazingly crafted, but ultimately not every episode will break the monotonous pattern.

Despite this shortcoming, there are certain moments that eventually make the binge worthwhile. Especially, Ritika Singh’s thoroughly acted instalment of the malfunctioning Air Conditioner. Where her carefully drafted array of emotions simply standouts in the series and provides a sharp edge to the episode.

Additionally, the show does a fine job of developing tension and suspense, which gradually increments the stakes as the episode progresses. This process is further aided by the use of a strong musical score and minutely crafted shots and camera angles (Some of them are really classy). Moreover, the pacing of the series is perfectly spot on, and never feels out of rhythm, but instead maintains a steady and engaging grip.

The paranormal objects in the series are also a grand highlight of their own. They are interesting and unique in nature, and it’s fun to see how they are finely tuned into the story and used to drive the story forward. The show also does a great job of making the objects feel like a significant part of the world, rather than just a forceful plot device.

Another thing that sets this drama series apart from others in the paranormal genre is its constant focus on character development. Something, that adds a level of emotional depth to the show that is often lacking in other supernatural genre series.
