How I Became a Gangster: Everything To Know About Netflix’s Polish Crime Drama

Netflix is embracing Polish cinema all over again with its first release of the year, How I Became a Gangster. In a similar vein to How I Fell in Love with a Gangster, this film also dives into the trenches of the Polish criminal underworld. Apart from the genre’s confines, this movie decides to go past it and introduces a new outlook.

In this upcoming film, the protagonist shares his story of how he was influenced to become a gangster as a child, building his business from the ground and finding love while being in this difficult situation. This Polish film will run for 2 hours and 20 minutes, telling an interesting story of how violence, friendship, love and drugs make the cornerstones of being a gangster.

The film is directed by Maciej Kawulski, who is also known for his producing work in 365 Days and his directing capabilities in How I Fell in Love with a Gangster. How I Became a Gangster, however, follows our protagonist, known only as Gangster, as he narrates his story from his childhood explaining in this run time of over two hours how he decided to become a gangster and what he must stomach to be a good one.

How I Became a Gangster Cast

The complete cast of this origin story includes our protagonist, Gangster, who is played by Marcin Kowalczyk, Tomasz Wlosok, who plays Walden, Jan Frycz as Daniel, Adam Woronowicz as Ryszard, Natalia Szroeder as Magda, Natalia Siwiec as Wiola, Mateusz Nedza as Krater, Józef Pawlowski as Tysiek, Adam Bobik as Lomek, Waldemar Kasta as Golum, Piotr Rogucki as Marian, Marek Dyjak as Officer Bielawski and finally Janusz Chabior as Magi.

How I Became a Gangster Plot/Synopsis

Netflix summarises How I Became a Gangster by explaining that “An ambitious gangster works his way up the ranks of Warsaw’s criminal underworld, and ultimately takes his shot at the big time.” This pretty much sums up the bones of the film. However, there are some details that cannot go remiss.

In the trailer, we see the young Gangster being bullied and fighting back, only to be caught by the authorities and let off the hook with a warning. It is after this inciting event he decides to become a gangster in Warsaw, garnering respect and fear like currency in the criminal underworld.

Soon, we see the gangster making his way to the top, remaining relatively fearless of the legal system, probably because the police officers are seen committing some scrupulous acts in the trailer showing their inner highly illegal lives. It is at this point we see some action intercut, briefcases with wads of cash wide open, gunmen standing on cars with their faces covered, and college students who have no idea why this man was ever in their class.

However, there is no good gangster story without stakes, and love is the best stake ever. In a bar scene, we see the two having a conversation about where he keeps his identity a secret, speaking only in innuendos that would allude to what his job is like.

Overall, the film is expected to pack some serious doses of sex, drugs and rock n’ roll, except the rock n’ roll here is shooting guns and minting cash.
