Candy Music Video Review: NCT Dream’s Colourful Blast of Christmas Cheer

Looking cute as ever, NCT Dream is out to steal our hearts and make their Candy business a success this Christmas! Remaking the original track released in 1996 by the model and pioneering 1st generation kpop group H.O.T. under SM Entertainment, Dream has come out with a refurbished version of the song on December 16, 2022, along with its complementary modernised music video as well.

Taking the classic ’96 video as its inspiration, the group, though debuted during other 3rd generation timeline, is once again bubbling with its youthful 4th generation or Gen Z energy. All 7 members of the group – Mark (leader), Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle and Jisung – are seen donning similar vibrant baggy attires as their seniors, and fusing the visuals of the video with their ‘Neo Culture Technology’ concept.

The video itself is reminiscent of their recent 2022 album release, Glitch Mode. They hit the same arcade scene again, with their new workstation, i.e. the Candy Factory, resembling their former Dream Lab from the Glitch Mode music video.

In the ’96 video of the song, the five members of the group were racing after the woman of their hearts and passing through sets like Disneyland, and dancing beside a carousel. However, the 2022 winter special release by NCT Dream is all about spreading Christmas cheer despite the lyrics relaying the same romantic track of messages as the original. Sporting their warm comfortable outfits, the septet are out on a mission to deliver presents to a child’s house. Once they’re caught in the act, they end up decorating the festive tree with him and eventually leave after winning his heart in the process.

The video game setting allows them to capture the pixelated heart as a power-up while they look after the boy fallen asleep. Later they too take off for the celebrations at Everland and bust out their adorable sweet moves beside a carousel, as the spitting image of H.O.T’s video concept.

The groovy choreography is quite inviting, and the viewers are bound to follow along especially since the members’ vocals make for a harmony that is upbeat and enticing. And it’s no surprise that their constant candid warmth and friendship for each other wins hearts yet again. The song itself is teeming with a cheerful and sanguine mix of the hip-hop sound, and is the perfect gift for NCTzens (the group’s fandom) this holiday season.

Although comparisons with the former release are going to trickle in no matter what, 7Dream knows how to work their charm, leaving us with no choice, but to fall for them all over again.
