Wednesday Review: The Mindreading Addams’ Girl Wins With Her Super Sass

Wednesday is a dark comedy series in English that brings to the screen our favourite girl from The Addams Family. Yes! It is none other than Wednesday Addams. The series depicts Wednesday’s youth and her psychic abilities that bring forth chaos. The series is packed with famous actors, specifically Jenna Ortega, who stars as Wednesday Addams. It is directed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar.

The full cast mainly includes Jenna Ortega, Gwendoline Christie, Riki Lindhome, Jamie McShane, Hunter Doohan, Percy Hynes White, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Georgie Farmer, Naomi J. Ogawa, Christina Ricci, Johnna Dias-Watson, Oliver Watson, Victor Dorobantu, Michael Okele, Moosa Mostafa, etc. The first season of the series contains 8 episodes, each lasting an hour. It surely is a musical feast, one can’t miss out on.

The Netflix official description of the film reads as:

Smart, sarcastic and a little dead inside, Wednesday Addams investigates a murder spree while making new friends — and foes — at Nevermore Academy.

-Wednesday Review Does Not Contain Spoilers-

The first episode begins with our main character, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega), walking to her school locker only to discover her younger brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), stuffed inside. Wednesday instantly taps into the past and reads his memory to figure out who messed with her brother. Unsurprisingly, she goes to the school swimming pool, finds the bully boys, and savagely throws in two packets of piranha fish. Oh, boy! It isn’t a gruesome scene, but I did laugh at the sheer insanity of it.

Wednesday Review To Enjoy

Moving on, we are shown that Wednesday has been expelled for attempted murder, and now she gets to shift to “Nevermore Academy,”  the school where Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia Addams (Catherine Zeta-Jones) studied, met, and fell in love. While watching the Addams couple romance in the car while singing a song, we are shown the wonderful Nevermore Academy, a true sight pleasing to every wizardry fan.

Can Wednesday adjust to her new surroundings? What adventures await her in the future?

Wednesday Review To Enjoy

Wednesday’s creators have won the hearts of the audience in just eight episodes. If you’re a Potterhead and you love the architecture of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, then Nevermore Academy’s infrastructure would blow your mind. The classrooms, dorm rooms, pathways, and gothic-style statues in the academy add a super essence to the series’ genre.

Additionally, for the younger generation, most of the supporting characters, specifically Wednesday Addams’ classmates, are going to be heartthrobs. Tyler Galpin (Hunter Doohan), Blanca Barclay (Joy Sunday), Xavier Thorpe (Percy Hynes White), and others steal the show with their good looks, acting skills, and, of course, magical powers.

Let’s Talk About Wednesday’s Soundtrack

One cannot fall in love with a series that has no music to increase one’s curiosity. And in Wednesday, the audience will never fail. This series is a musical feast for viewers, packed with ultimate soundtracks. At the beginning of the series, we get to see the Addams couple singing, and that very song itself adds spice to the show.

Wednesday Review To Enjoy

As the episodes go on, the background score and soundtracks perfectly align, increasing the curiosity of the viewers. Specifically, when Wednesday Addams aggressively plays the cello, the scenes show other supporting characters reacting to it, which looks both humorous and a little weird. Strange in a good way!

Wednesday: is It Worth the Watch?

Absolutely yes. This deadpan, dark humour series is a visual and aural feast. The savage dialogue of Wednesday, the suspense, the gothic setting, the costumes, the supporting characters, the humour, the music, oh, blimey! Wednesday is a one-day event for people over the age of 18. Don’t let the kids watch it though; it’s pretty spooky and sometimes mildly gruesome.

Wednesday is streaming on Netflix.
