Ancient Apocalypse: Graham Hancock’s War of Words With Archaeologists

Graham Hancock is infamous for questioning historical facts and challenging archaeologists with his theories. This time, he has got his big break through Netflix’s Ancient Apocalypse. Graham’s documentary series is every historian’s nightmare.

In his documentary series, the journalist sets on a journey around the world to prove that humans have amnesia. Graham believes that due to amnesia, humans have forgotten about an advanced civilisation that existed in the Ice Age. His documentary looks more like a series adaptation of Graham’s Book, Magicians of The God.

His statements are the same as the book’s sentences. There is nothing new with the documentary except advancement in cinematography. For three decades, Graham Hancock has been challenging historians with his theories which remain unproved to date.

Ancient Apocalypse: Let’s Recap Real Quick!

Each episode of this documentary series is shot on a different archaeological site. Graham has mapped the world to prove to the world that history is yet to be revealed. Episodes begin with clips of Graham’s “enemies” calling him names, and insulting him for his speculations and then the narrative shifts towards Graham, a know-it-all, a calm personality who, with his composed demeanour takes his audience to different historical places and convinces them to acknowledge the “Lost Civilisation”.

Ancient Apocalypse: Episodes

Once There Was A Flood

Joining hands with Danny Hilman Natawidjaja, Graham tells his audience that a natural hill in Indonesia is a man-made structure. Both Graham and Danny believe that Gunung Padang is a man-made pyramid that archaeologists are too lazy to investigate. He disregards the Victorian Notion of revolution and progress and is adamant about proving to the world that Gunung Padang is an artificial site.

Stranger In A Time Of Chaos

In the second episode, the host visits The Great Pyramid Of Cholula in Mexico. According to archaeologists, this man-made structure was built in the 3rd century BCE as a foundation for the Temple of Quetzalcoatl. As always, Graham disagrees with history.

According to Graham, The Great Pyramid Of Cholula was made by an ancient civilisation. He criticises the archaeologists for disregarding the Native story of Cholula, which states that the great pyramid is the work of giants that survived a great flood.

Hancock believes that the cultural heroes of folklore and myths are real humans that lived during the Ice Age.

Sirius Rising

Hancock calls out archaeologists for being obsessed with a false narrative and asserts that the great ruins of Malta are a false image that archaeologists have set up to hide the truth of the Lost Civilisation. Graham believes that the people of Malta were not advanced enough to build such fascinating structures and that people from his “Lost Civilisation” had travelled to Malta to build the structures.

Ghosts Of A Drowned World

Taking up the Bimini Road this time, Hancock calls it a man-made structure and calls archaeologists “reckless” for putting in any efforts to prove that the Bimini Road is built by “Atlanteans”. Hancock refers to the Greco-Roman myth and alleges that map-makers have admitted to having taken help from the Ice Age to create a map of Antarctica.

Legacy Of The Sages

Sages or Atlanteans are Hancock’s explanation for everything that has ever happened. While historians are currently studying how ancient buildings must have led to agriculture, Graham Hancock shoots down this claim too. According to Graham, hunters and gatherers could never build monuments, and his ancient sages (The Atlanteans) were the ones behind the building of Gobekli Tepe.

America’s Lost Civilisation

Once again lashing out at archaeologists were being biased and ignorant towards facts, Graham also calls out the administrators of Serpent Mound, who stopped the journalist to film on the site.

This episode shows Graham calling native Americans ‘not smart’ enough to study astronomical observations. Despite his long disclaimer to not sound racist, the journalist pretty much took away Native Americans’ credit for discovering the Serpent Mound and credited his “Atlanteans” for this discovery too.

Fatal Winter

The historic city of Derinkuyu is an underground cave city built in Cappadocia. According to archaeologists, this city was built by using axes in the first millennium BCE. But Graham Hancock thinks differently.

According to the journalist, axes were used during the Ice Age by the Atlantis civilisation. Therefore, Graham says that there is not enough evidence to prove that Derinkuyu was not built by his ‘Sages’.

Cataclysm and Rebirth

In the final episode of his documentary, Hancock states the idea that constellations existed 10,000 years before any evidence of their shape was discovered. He challenges his ‘enemies’ and warns humanity to bow down before nature before the new-age ‘Atlantis’ also meets the same fate as the previous one.

Ancient Apocalypse: Our Final Thoughts

Firstly, being called the modern-day ‘Atlantis’ by Graham Hancock boosts our confidence. Now, coming to the documentary, since Hancock accepts that the modern-day audience has some intellect, we have some thoughts to share about his show.

Somebody needs to explain the definition of ‘myth’ to Graham Hancock. With science and logic being at their peak, viewers are intellectuals demanding more evidence and less folklore, Graham. Re-iterating statements and theories with dramatic music and amazing cinematography would not win the audience’s trust.

As the audience, it is, therefore a request that the next time Graham Hancock sets on an expedition, he pays more attention to the facts than the legends.

  1. You have a pretty unintelligent take / recap, obviously he doesn’t believe giants built the pyramid. You’re leaving out context or you’re extremely unable to process information. He explained there had to been a massive flood at some point, that cultures all around the world talk of this flood. Also, what makes you think native Americans can’t be Atlanteans? How would you know? Seems you’re the racist one for just assuming that.
