Exception Review: Sci-Fi Anime With a Promising Plot That Raises Questions

Exception is Netflix’s brand-new anime that will make you think of the purpose of our existence and what humanity needs to get done. Directed by Yuzo Sato, the show has the voices of various actors in the English and Japanese versions.

With Nolan North and Chikahiro Kobayashi as Lewis, Robbie Daymond and Takahiro Sakurai as Mack, Ali Hillis and Yuko Kaida as Nina, Eugene Byrd and Takanori Hoshino as Oscar, and Nadine Nicole and Atsumi Tanezaki as Patty.

Exception is a thriller sci-fi horror that revolves around a crew created through 3D printing who are sent in search of a suitable planet for terraforming. However, a system malfunction results in one of the crew members being deformed which leads to a series of mysteries being revealed.

Netflix’s synopsis of the series reads:

Humanity’s last hope lies in the hands of five specialists tasked with terraforming a new planet- until a fatal error complicates their mission.

-Exception Review contains No Spoilers-

Exception begins with the specialist Nina exiting The Womb where she had been reprinted as she enters the spaceship where the mission to prepare a new planet for terraforming begins. As she welcomes her teammates one by one, she notices that the last member Lewis has had an accident.

Exception still

Now with a monstrous deformed Lewis, the crew is torn between letting him live or reprinting him by destroying what he has become. However, during this decision-making, the deformed Lewis escapes their hold while causing chaos everywhere.

I have to say, this series was one that really gets intriguing and thrilling because the sci-fi plus thriller combination makes you want more. The plot really makes up for the lack of good animation that they have used in this series. The plot really holds you up till the end and I have loved how it plays out throughout the way.

The surprises and issues that this series tackles are sufficient to make you think about the bigger issues that we may face in the future. It also gets us thinking about what humanity is and what it has become because at the end of the day, you will realise that both the ideal followed by the two opposing sides both make sense.

The story and the characters have made this show among the best watches for me till now, however, the animation could have really been better. I mean when you have a tag saying Japanese Anime then my hopes do get high and this show has not held this part of the deal.

Summing Up: Exception

Altogether, watch this show for the plot because these 10 episodes will really get you thinking about issues that have been kept hidden for a long time. However, I will once again warn you about the animation which, if you can bear it, then you are going to love this show.

Also, a warning that there will be some nudity but it is right at the beginning only.

Watch Exception on Netflix.

  1. OK, i get it they are trying something new, but this new is not working, this made me almost lost faith in anime, if this is anime on netflix from now on, im cancelling netflix TODAY, please make regular anime now and wait like 10 years before doing this animation style, you forgot to warn people about getting something called: you might get to be SNOWEBLIND, get glasses for this one, im half way trough eps 1, this i recomend to watch like 15 minutes OR LESS top at a time, its stiff and weird, i have it on english speak, the mouths dosent move correctly while talking, i rather watch BARBIE MOVIE atleast that looking cuter, to MUCH art style like piccaso style,

My score for now: 1.0 of 5, and for the record nothing personly but: AAAAARRRGGGG WWÆÆÆRLLL AAAAAAH MY POOR YEYS.

  2. Watched this on the 18th – I thought the visuals were weird, but the story grabbed me with the first two episodes. It’s not unique – but I only require a story to be told well, it doesn’t have to be a new story or have a different twist. This one does fine – a few questions are raised and some are answered – the twist or reveal is not outrageous – I’m okay with the ending.

Sure, it looks strange, but I’ve been watching weird animation since Rocky & Bullwinkle. I would only recommend to people who like to endulge in odd things. It was time well spent for me.
