House of the Dragon attracted unprecedented eyeballs with the premiere of its first episode on 22 August 2022. It drew in 9.99 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max after premiering and even broke the record of the original Game of Thrones series premiere. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s 2018 novel Fire & Blood and is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.
Looking at its record-breaking performance, the creators of the show have already announced the renewal of the series for the second season in an Instagram post. The news has certainly surprised the fans and is definitely welcomed. The post has a small video of the fire consuming the House Targaryen sign as the number two comes on our screen.
It is captioned with “Fire reigns. #HouseoftheDragon has been renewed for Season 2.” The series is directed by Miguel Sapochnik, and the teleplay is written by Ryan J Condal. Starring Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen, Milly Alcock as Young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen, Emily Carey as young Lady Alicent Hightower, Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower, Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon, Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, and Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole.
In the first episode of House of the Dragon, we saw how King Viserys I Targaryen awaits his wife to give birth to a son who will take the throne as the King after him. But the childbirth procedure ended up taking his wife’s life and soon after his newborn son passed away as well. It showed how the king’s brother Prince Daemon is eager to get on the iron throne and rule the kingdom.
However, the council, especially the hand of the king deems him unfit and tries to convince the king to make his only daughter Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heir to the throne. Finally, by the end of the episode, we saw a female being announced as the heir to the Iron throne, for the very first time in their history.
While the viewers wait for the release of the second episode, the news of House of the Dragon Season 2 renewal has increased the excitement even more. In fact, the viewership on the first day was immaculate enough but by now it has climbed to 20 million viewers on the pilot episode of House of the Dragon.
House of the Dragon is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar for Indian viewers and for the US it can be viewed on HBO and HBO Max.
