Tomodachi Game Episode 12 Review: A Bloody Finale

We have reached the end of this precarious game in Tomodachi Game Episode 12. However, the show’s final episode might not mean the same thing for the game. Let’s find out more in this review!

Tomodachi Game Episode 12 Overview

Tomodachi Game Episode 12 Title

Tomodachi Game, or Friends Game in English, is a psychological strategy anime belonging to the Death Game genre, a kind of anime that pits several characters against each other in a bid to make one of them outlast them all. It is based on a manga written by Mikoto Yamaguchi and illustrated by Yuuki Satou. This episode of the show is also referred to as Friends Game Episode 12.

The anime adaptation is developed by Studio Okuroto Noboru, a studio with only two full-length anime adaptations in its catalogue, Special Training in the Secret Dungeon and the second season of How Not To Summon A Demon Lord. The show is directed by Hirofumi Ogura, the director behind several well-known shows such as Black Butler and Cells At Work. You can read our review of the previous episode here!

Tomodachi Game Episode 12 Review- A Sign Of Death

Kokorogi Nude Tomodachi Game Episode 12

This was the most stereotypical ending this show could have had. That could be a good or a bad thing based upon your opinion of the show right now. Still, subjectively speaking, the show did a pretty good job in coming through with the cliffhanger of the last episode and managing to make it compelling enough as a finale to the entire season. With a lot of plot still left to be unfolded, it was pretty obvious that this episode wasn’t going to be a complete ending to the show. What we got was still more than acceptable and made for enough reason to check the source material out.

The special Tomodachi game was a surprisingly quick one, but the reason for that was made very clear by the end of the episode. It was also surprisingly gory and hard to watch due to the amount of physical trauma inflicted upon one of the participants, made worse by the fact that this came out of nowhere and was absolutely unavoidable. If only Yuichi hadn’t been bold enough to challenge the people behind the game in front of the person most suspected of running the entire thing, right?

Dark Yuichi Tomodachi Game Episode 12

The game this time around was a simple one, but it was quite effective in doing what it was designed to do. However, this has been a running theme for the show until the end that the games aren’t quite making the best of the characters that are playing them. The one involved in this one, apart from Yuichi, was Kokorogi, and being the most annoying character in the show by far, she failed to generate much, if any, sympathy towards her cause. She has been the least interesting member of the group for a while now, and that didn’t change much in the finale.

The antagonists this time around were quite sinister, if a little stereotypical. The leader against Yuichi formed a great core to the episode that tied its theme throughout. As Professor Heinz Doofenshmirtz once put so eloquently -“Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I witnessed a highly manipulative and decisive game of Rock Paper Scissors in anime, I’d have two nickels – which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it happened twice.” Overall, this was a solid episode that showcased all the good things about the show and made you wish for another season.

When the overall production and package of the show are considered, which we’ll talk about more in the overall review of the show, it is apparent that it doesn’t consume that many resources to produce. A second season honestly wouldn’t be a bad idea, given that the show really started to pick up its pace in the last quarter. The mystery is compelling enough to draw an audience, and the series even ended with what can be called a cliffhanger. Perhaps no Game Over for Tomodachi Game yet?

Verdict

Tomodachi Game Episode 12 managed to deliver a compelling narrative and was a nice send-off to the show. There is much more to this story, which might see its end someday, but not now.
