The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4: Two Henrys Under the Same Roof

The Time Traveler’s Wife seems to be heading in a more emotional and concrete direction it seems. The fourth episode not only touched on Clare finding a sort of acceptance towards the younger version of Henry she meets when she is 20 but, also her friendships and the introduction of one new, interesting character.

In the present day, Henry is visiting Clare’s apartment for the first time for dinner and to meet her best friends- Charisse and Gomez. In flashbacks, we see Clare hasn’t exactly been loyal to both are best friends but, they are still on the same boat together. Gomez does not particularly take a liking for our young and reckless Henry and Charisse clearly questions his intentions with Clare. Things only get more complicated when a 41-year-old Henry shows up at the door, time jumping.

Obviously, with two Henrys under the roof, things aren’t smooth. Especially, with the time-travelling revelation out in the open and, the 28-year-old Henry’s girlfriend- Ingrid popping up unannounced at the dinner party. What happens next with the group can be only explained as a dramatic but, ultimately, cathartic experience that all of our characters needed.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 revolves strongly around the theme of how falling in love is never in anyone’s control. Clare falling for Henry and vice versa was never in either of their control. Henry downright spits to the 18-year-old Clare that he practically groomed her but, Clare also lets the 41-year-old Henry know that she could also be the one grooming him. The entire essence of the segment is something that comes to us later that none of them planned for their love story to be this way but, inevitably it is what it is.

For the past few episodes, we have also seen Clare wanting the older, more mature Henry to be the one with whom she spends her life. Because that is the one that visited her since she was six. Yet it is the 28-year-old Henry that has to meet in her adult life and, is supposed to be with. Yes, she cannot stop thinking about the older Henry but, again, it is not in her control and we see a moment of Clare having mercy on the younger Henry and letting him in. As for Ingrid, 28-year-old Henry’s girlfriend, the scene she shares with 41-year-old Henry asking if she’s dead in the future is extremely hurtful, imprinting on the audience the fleeting nature of life.

Rose Leslie and Theo James’ chemistry in The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 is bang on. There is a lot of nudity and sex but, it is Leslie and James’ coming together, irrespective of what “age” they tell us, just simply feels right. Well, maybe, because they are, in fact, soulmates.

The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4: Final Thoughts

Overall, The Time Traveler’s Wife Episode 4 is a huge improvement from the first two episodes which were really cringe-worthy and uncomfortable. With the third and now the fourth episode, we are slowly approaching the main act of the show and it already feels tragic and heavy.
