Deaimon Episode 1 Overview
Deaimon is a slice of life, gourmet, and drama anime focusing on a Japanese sweets shop. It is based on a manga written by Rin Asano.
The anime adaptation is developed by Studio Encourage Films, an outfit that has produced many other anime such as Etotama, Hitorijime My Hero, and Isekai Cheat Magician. The show is being produced with Fumitoshi Oizaki (A Centaur’s Life, Etotama) serving as director, Reiko Yoshida (Blue Period, A Silent Voice) supervising the scripts, and Sakae Shibuya (Girl Friend Note, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood) designing the characters and overseeing the animation.

With just the view of the promotional poster of Deaimon, our mouths start watering, and our hearts start harmonizing with the feel-good atmosphere this anime is trying to bring to us. The show takes place in a wagashi shop in Kyoto. To pursue his dream of becoming a musician, Nagomu Irino left his house 10 years ago. When he returns after receiving a letter about his father’s health condition, he finds Itsuka Yukihira, a ten-year-old girl who has been working in the shop and is, in general, acknowledged as the successor of the shop while he has been away. The anime focuses on these two characters, their situations, losses, and growth.
Deaimon starts as a relaxing, wholesome show with a steady pace and great storyline. Nagomu seems like a goofy character at first glance, too carefree and busy chasing his ambition. He left to pursue his dreams and returned to find a ten-year-old, Itsuka, who seemed always to put her best foot forward, seemed mature for her age, and had a friendly yet somewhat intimidating personality. Their interactions are very engaging and portray some of the characters’ insecurities. It will be very interesting to mingle these two characters together in the plot.
Multiple themes were addressed in the premiere episode of Deaimon, ranging from abandonment issues, shattered dreams, and expectations from children to legacy, all blended into a comedic story. This exhibits the true nature of the anime. Even though the general upbeat themes and characters exist, there is a dark history present behind most of them, giving the anime a realistic undertone.
The animation style is pretty good, with the background art being amazing and very appropriate. The opening theme song and the ending theme song are also light, soothing, and pertinent to Deaimon. The depiction of wagashi, which pairs with green tea, perfectly captures the essence of the relationship between Nagomu and Itsuka. It will be captivating to see how the plot will progress from here after the rough sketch has already been etched.
Verdict
Deaimon Episode 1 represents a spectacular artwork, dyed in Kyoto colors, of some characters who are hurt but are trying their best in their lives. These characters get into comedic situations together and try to overcome them together, re-building their trust and aspirations and re-painting a newer, happier picture.
