Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 Overview
Komi Can’t Communicate, or Komi-san wa Komyushou desu in original Japanese, is a comedy and slice of life anime based on an extremely popular manga written by Tomohito Oda. It is being adapted into an anime by Studio OLM, a very well known anime studio known for bringing several well-known projects like Pokemon and Odd Taxi, among other things.
The anime is being directed by Ayumu Watanabe, a veteran director known for directing several critically and commercially successful anime such as Space Brothers and Doraemon. He is also being assisted in direction by Kazuki Kawagoe, another veteran director primarily known for directing Beyblade. You can check out our review for the second episode here! Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 Review- Plot and Characters
Komi is supposedly perfect. Everyone in her high school class sees her as the epitome of everything good in this cruel world of ours. She is their idol, easily the most popular student of her class, and well nigh untouchable. That might sound like a good thing for people who like being in the spotlight and being the centre of attention. However, for someone who has anxiety and finds it difficult to even speak in front of people, nothing sounds like more of a nightmare than this.

Therein lies the magic of Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3, as it plays in contrasts. The contrast of the most popular girl being unable to utter more than a single syllable in front of anyone who cares to listen. The contrast of a former goth-punk Tadano being the only one to realise this and bonding with her because of it. The sheer simplicity of the idea combined with the near-perfect execution makes for an unmissable series.
Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 maintains the rare form that the series has been in, with its four parts seeing Komi make another friend and interacting with the ones she made earlier. There is something heartfelt about her getting a phone and wanting Tadano to be her first contact, and in the same way, one can hear the unsaid when Komi reveals that she has never needed a phone before.

She never had someone she could talk to before meeting Tadano. Imagine having literally no one in your life that you can call, contact, or speak to in any manner. Imagine being so lonely despite being constantly under public scrutiny because of being so adored. Imagine growing up to be a kind and gentle person anyway, despite what something like this would have done to a person with a resting bitch face. Imagine being Komi Shoko.
Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 was also the funniest episode of anything I’ve seen in quite a while. The jokes were both subtle and obvious, being hilarious either way. The show can use its art style to absolute perfection to deliver a comedy unlike any other. For a concept that is so played out, Komi Can’t Communicate’s high school feels more natural and realistic than most others. We have yet to see the weirdness that the show described in the first episode, but I’m sure it will be amazing when we do see it.
Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 Review- Art and Music
The music in Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 was phenomenal. The piano ballad that signifies the start of a tender moment between the characters is worthy of being played in front of an actual audience. There are also some entertaining tunes that play while the show is in full comedy mode. That’s not even counting the sublime opening and the sweet ending. This show is truly a treat to the ears.
It seems like the animators are having a grand old time animating the show. The show still looks fantastic despite them not being as overly minute with every little detail as they were in episode 1, and who can blame them for that? All that matters is that the series looks great, the character designs are impeccable, and all is well in the world.
Verdict
Komi Can’t Communicate Episode 3 was astonishing in its quality, and the amount of heart put into it. The series is beginning to look like the standout of this season more and more each week. Watch the show on Netflix!
