Netflix’s Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild Review: Interesting But Falls Through

Netflix’s Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild is an animated movie based on the Monster Hunter video games and pretty much looks like one too. The story of this movie is set in a time and space where humans and monsters must co-exist. It puts focus on the hunters who hunt these monsters in order to protect humankind. However, hunting becomes more difficult as the appetite of the monsters increases.

Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild review doesn’t contain spoilers –

Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild revolves around a young boy named Aiden who wants to become a hunter. As the story unfolds, Aiden has to rise to the occasion and serve as a warrior to fight against the elder dragon. Aiden has a lot of passion and ambition. He is sloppy but gets the work done. This thing can be well understood from the scene where he catches the culprit behind the fake footsteps in the village.

The Chosen One

One of the things that are interesting and evident from Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild, is that the destruction of the human race is inevitable. The whole concept of the elder dragon is that during the migration period, it flies across the globe, destroying everything on its path with its fire tail. These dragons can fly around the globe and kill everything and everyone that is on their path.

Aiden can’t find the elder dragon alone. He needs his mentor and allies with him to slay it. That is exactly what happens. The formula of having an underqualified yet ambitious person do something to save humans and on whom everyone relies is an old one. Quite frankly, it is also overused, which is visible in Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild.

Another thing that you get reminded of while watching this film is the movie How to Train Your Dragons. There are a few similarities between Aiden and Hiccup which you can notice if you have watched the latter film. The other characters in Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild has a few similarities with it too. Even though, How to Train Your Dragons has Vikings in it.

When Aiden goes on the adventurous journey of slaying the elder dragon, he starts with being an unaware and untrained boy. Through his experiences in Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild, he grows emotionally, mentally and psychically. This change makes him more fierce and stronger. His sloppiness slowly vanishes until he becomes a proper hunter.

Watch It or Skip It?

However, the villagers in this film are more peaceful as the theme of Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild is about balance. Balance in nature and between the two opposing forces, predators and prey. This film serves as a better adaptation of Paul W. S. Anderson’s film Monster Hunter. However, it falls through. The storyline gets a little boring at the end. You will also find yourself looking away from the screen, as it doesn’t grasp your attention fully.

Hunter: Legends of the Guild fighting scene

The dialogues are at times confusing, and the opening of Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild seemed too fast. But then, of course, the whole film is less than an hour long. That doesn’t mean Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild doesn’t have any thrilling action or adventure. It is, in fact, full of that. If you have played the game and followed the franchise, then you should definitely watch this film. But if you are clueless then you might want to catch up, or you can even skip this one.

You can watch Monster Hunter: Legends of the Guild on Netflix.
