Netflix's Nothing's the Same: Lokillo Florez is a Phenomenon in the World of Stand-up Comedy

This was a very entertaining show— one of the best stand-up comedy shows I’ve seen in a while. There were just as many laughs as there were groans, which is what I’d expect any good set to be. The way he handles his material is terrific—his absurdist approach to storytelling results in many laughs and clever lines alike.

There isn’t much that makes me laugh harder than stand-up comedy. I love the way it uses humour to tackle truths about society and our culture. If we’re able to laugh at something, then maybe we can get away from our egos a little bit and pay closer attention to reality — a concept more people could benefit from.

If you’ve ever wondered why some people are funny, and others…well…not so much, one of the reasons is practice. It seems like something we all should know already, but some people are heavy-hearted with a silver tongue while others have a whole pocketful of one-liners.

Comedian Lokillo seems to possess the latter trait and a mind that is not afraid to speak out on controversial topics. He hilariously investigates how Latin Americans have adjusted to a new world and a new normal through his stand-up comedy show (called the same name as the title of this very post!).

lokillo: Nothing's the Same

Florez’s show is a must-watch. He gave me the giggles. My sides hurt from laughing so much. His act is that Latin Americans usually require a hug anytime they meet a friend or do business with someone new. Still, now that no-hugging policies prevail, the people of Latin America have adjusted their behaviour.

With seriousness and laughter, he showed holograms, donned the futuristic avatar. His comedy is reminiscent of Jerry Seinfeld and Steven Wright, who also use minimalism in their performances.

Lokillo: Nothing’s the Same is an off-the-cuff stand-up comedy show that is fresh, different and illuminates Latino perspectives on culture, identity and language in a humorous way. This unique performance is based on stories by Florez all about the pandemic included in the show are depictions of Latino characters in film, TV and theatre.
