Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2- Overview

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2 Plot

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 is produced by Kyoto Animation as part of the Summer Anime 2021 Lineup. The series acts as the direct sequel to its 2017 original. It is being directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who is also well known for directing various other Kyoto Animation anime such as Air and Clannad. Season 1 director Yasuhiro Takemoto also shares billing for the director after his untimely death due to the Kyoto Animation arson tragedy.

Episode 2 picks up right where episode 1 left off, with the series taking a more narrative-driven approach rather than the first season’s mostly standalone episodes. All the usual suspects are also back, including a new character named Ilulu, who appears to be playing the role of the antagonist.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2 Review- The Plot

Kobayashi and Ilulu

This was Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid‘s return to form, in my humble opinion. The plot of this episode consisted of exactly what was missing from the first episode- Gravitas. There were stakes, and there were emotional moments. This episode managed to hit just the right beats and should be counted among Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid’s best episodes to date.

Just a heads up, I’m going to spoil the plot points of Episode 1 here. If you are reading this article, then you probably already have watched Episode 1. Also, it has been a whole week since that episode aired, and if you haven’t watched it yet, that’s on you.

Tohru

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2 was hilarious, smart, and full of emotionally charged moments at the same point. I am also glad that the “Miss Kobayashi becomes Mister Kobayashi” thing didn’t go on for too long and lasted for just about a gag’s worth before going away. Your mileage might vary for those kinds of plot threads, but I don’t like them as much. The situation with Ilulu was also resolved in a manner that was very Kobayashi-esque, which I very much appreciate. After all, I like when things are Kobayashi-esque. That’s why I like the anime in the first place.

Overall, the plot was a massive improvement over Episode 1.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2 Review- The Characters

Kanna Episode 2

There weren’t many supporting characters present in this episode, just the main ones. Kobayashi, Kanna, Tohru and Ilulu were the only characters that graced the screens in Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2, and it was fantastic all the same. As we have already established, the chemistry between the characters in dragon maid is tremendous, and Ilulu makes for a fine addition to the tandem. The show is as wholesome as ever now, and the anime world is a better place for it.

Kobayashi is just as smart as ever, and her thinking to herself remains one of the best parts of each episode. The more I think about it, the more I feel that Kobayashi is the real reason the show works so well. Also, no Lucoa in this episode, just a little bit of Riko and her sister, which can only be a good thing.

Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2 Review- The Art and Music

Angry Tohru
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 Episode 2- Tohru becomes a shonen protagonist.

Nothing much to say here. The opening theme is growing on me more and more each time I listen to it. The colours pop out of the screen, and the palette is very bright and refreshing. The comic moments are enhanced by the animation a lot. There was even an action scene that looked right out of a high-budget shonen anime. All good stuff.

Verdict

This episode was fantastic. Even better than many Season 1 episodes. Would you please keep them coming, KyoAni? Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Season 2 looks ready to steal this season for itself if it keeps putting out episodes like this.
