Mala Aai Vhhaychy: Before Kriti Sanon’s Mimi, 3 Reasons You Must Watch The Original

Kriti Sanon recently got her fans excited with Mimi posters. The actor will have her first digital release in the Laxman Utekar directorial. The film is loosely based on the 2010 Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy! Directed by Samruoddhi Porey, the original story features Urmilla Kanetkar, Stacy Bee and Sulabha Deshpande.

If you loved the posters and are looking forward to seeing Sanon’s story, you should first take a look at the original film. While I’m sure Laxman Utekar’s directorial will give us a heartwarming story, it’s true that an original is an original. If you are a curious cinephile like me, you would definitely want to watch the Marathi film Mala Aai Vhhaychy before watching its remake.

In this article, I’ll tell you three reasons why you should watch Mala Aai Vhhaychy before watching Mimi:

The story

Samruoddhi Porey has written a story that seems quite raw and honest. The story is set in a village in Maharashtra, and she has aptly captured the life of villagers. Porey’s story focuses on Yashoda (Urmila Kanetkar) and her motherly emotions for a child that doesn’t belong to her. Porey’s story has everything – emotions, jokes, sadness and drama. Marathi film industry’s music is quite underrated, and this film strikes a chord with viewers with its songs.

Performances

Urmila Kanetkar carries the entire film on her shoulders. She makes you fall in love with Yashoda’s simplicity, and when she breaks down, it aches you. At times, her performance is OTT, but that’s just how her character is written. Along with Kanitkar, child actor Aiden Barkley also wins you with his cuteness.

Not the first remake

Mimi isn’t the first film that is inspired by Mala Aai Vhhaychy! The film’s story is so incredible and captivating that it first grabbed the eyes of the Tollywood industry. In 2013, directed Singeetam Srinivasa Rao made a film called Welcome Obama based on Porey’s film. The Telugu remake also stars Urmila Kanetkar in the lead role.

Thanks to digital platforms, you don’t have to search for Mala Aai Vhhaychy! on the internet. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Meanwhile, the story of Kriti Sanon’s film is set in Rajasthan. The film also stars Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Manoj Pahwa and Supriya Pathak. Laxman Utekar and Rohan Shankar have penned the story, and the music is by A R Rahman. Mimi trailer is expected to release in 2 days. The film will release on Netflix and Jio Cinema on July 30, 2021.

Earlier, in an interaction with IANS, about the film, Kriti Sanon had said, “It’s a lot on me. It’s around this character Mimi. It is very entertaining, a beautiful script. One of the most beautiful scripts I have read. You will have a lot of humour and situational humour. At the same time, there are a lot of characters you will take back home.”
