Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet Review: Alarm Bells for Humans

David Attenborough’s documentary Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet is currently streaming on Netflix. The scientific documentary is based on the thorough research of Swedish scientist Professor Johan Rockström. Directed by Jon Clay, Attenborough is the narrator of this 1 hour 13 minutes documentary.

Often, such scientific documentary highlights the global warming and how humans are walking on the path of their destruction. In the Netflix documentary Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet, Attenborough and Rockström walk us through more factors other than global warming, causing our planet’s disturbance.

Johan Rockström tells us ‘how life’s intricate complexity is essential for our own survival.’ He adds that biodiversity is collapsing, and along with it, our climate is changing tremendously. The scientist tells us how we have pushed the boundaries that led to a drastic change in the Earth’s stable climate of 10,000 years.

Suppose the human pressure on planet Earth is not controlled; in the coming decades, we might see ice caps melting, extinction of species, the collapse of biodiversity and extreme climate conditions. In his research, Johan found out that humans are living on the planet in the high-risk zone. Now is the time to bring everything in control, or the damage will be irreversible.

The documentary keeps you glued while also leaves the mouth dry as we learn the harsh reality of what we have done to the planet. Johan tells us that we have reached a point of carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere of roughly 415 parts per million. He says that 9 out of 10 people inhale highly polluted air as the oxygen level is dipping and pollution levels are increasing.

The more humans will keep breaking the boundaries of planet Earth, there will be a rise in the occurrence of droughts, heatwaves, floods, and melting of ice. The Netflix documentary also highlights the horror of how human pressure has affected the Amazon forest, ocean life, and the increase in the level of aerosols in the air. We may have been boasting of having enough water on the planet. But due to the pollutants and untimely change in climate, the ocean has become 26% more acidic.

Our lifestyle affects the planet badly and cuts down our life expectancy by three years or more. Netflix documentary Breaking Boundaries: The Science Of Our Planet also features other scientists and researchers like Prof. Veerabhadran Ramanathan, Daniella Teixeira, and Terry Hughes.

Breaking Boundaries: The Science Of Our Planet: Is it worth watching?

Overall, the 75 minutes give us a deep insight into the reality we know exists. But the Netflix documentary shows us how critical and threatening it is to every life on Earth. These are alarm bells to humans to not be dependent on fossil fuels and care about nature like their family before the worst happens. As Johan Rockström says, “What we do between 2020 and 2030 will be the decisive decade for humanity’s future on Earth.”
