Sandwiched Forever is a Hindi-language sitcom directed by Rohan Sippy and starring Aahana Kumra, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Atul Kulkarni, Lubna Salim, Zakir Hussain, Divya Seth Shah.
If you’re tired of the blood-thirsty shows that keep popping up everywhere on OTT platforms and revolve around murder, mayhem and a lot of cussing, then Sandwiched Forever is probably a good idea. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think this is a flawless show by any means, but it does come as a breath of fresh air from the Indian content that we are oh-so-familiar with.
Sandwiched Forever revolves around Sameer and Naina, an urban couple who end up moving into an apartment right next to their respective parents. And as expected, it’s met with situations which we have all faced sometime or the other in our lives.
The basic premise is simple and the jokes are ones that we have seen and heard over the years. But honestly, after watching too many “serious” shows on television, Sandwiched Forever feels new and refreshing and you might just get around to laughing with it. It’s not to say that the show does not invite a few eyerolls and groans here and there, but the lead actors are charming enough to keep you engaged.
I think what I thought was the most interesting aspect of the show is the fact that it is pretty relatable. I have had these situations happen in my life once or twice and it is as annoying and embarrassing as Sameer and Naina make it out to be. Sandwiched Forever made me laugh at a respectable rate and had enough content to keep me engaged.
The sets of the show are loud and overdramatic, much like its inhabitants. It can cause annoyance to some, but the loudness went well with the dramatic antics of the families and added to the funny element.
All the characters in the show, including the overbearing parents, are quite likeable. This is a problem that I face with sitcoms – there are characters that I absolutely love, or absolutely hate. However, Sandwiched Forever does not consist of these extremes. All the characters are equally likeable and have their own quirks and redeeming qualities.
The show consists of six principal cast members including Aahana Kumra, Kunaal Roy Kapur, Atul Kulkarni, Lubna Salim, Zakir Hussain, Divya Seth Shah are great in their respective roles. Kumra and Roy Kapur as Naina and Sameer are excellent – they are sweet, relatable and lovable. The two also shared a decent amount of chemistry that would make you root for them. The parents, specifically Atul Kulkarni and Zakir Hussain are great as the respective fathers and add a dose of eccentricity and humour in their roles. All the actors aren’t people who really have much to prove – we’ve seen their mettle too many times in too many shows. However, their addition to the cast surely does elevate the viewing experience.
Summing up: Sandwiched Forever
Sandwiched Forever is a decent attempt at being the next-gen Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, Khichdi or Dekh Bhai Dekh. Its problems and humour are relatable and Sameer and Naina’s problems with their overbearing parents are stuff all us Indian kids have faced in our lives. The problem of privacy in India, especially for married couples (or couples in general), is a huge bone of contention for anyone in our generation. This can be felt deeply in the show that, in spite of its flaws, manages to shine. The half-an-hour long 15 episode sitcom is the perfect binge-watch to get out of your slump and won’t make you think too much.
