The new instalment of the Purge series, which was titled The Forever Purge was all set to hit the box office on July 10, 2020. Produced by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse, the movie is, however, now postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic. Since there has been an undeniable impact on cinemas worldwide, the decision seems pretty fair.
The first movie The Purge was released in 2013 with Ethan Hawke and took place in an affluent suburban neighbourhood with a home-invasion twist. The sequel, 2014’s The Purge: Anarchy, took actor Frank Grillo to a lower-income city setting. Grillo’s character returned for 2016’s The Purge: Election Year and fought to protect an anti-Purge presidential candidate from assassination. The fourth movie, The First Purge, went back in time to see how the annual horror fest got started.
As terrifying as it is to watch people killing each other with no mercy at all, the movie still keeps its viewers hooked in hope to see who survived.
The movie has been a treat for all thriller fans and the delay has left fans waiting for an indefinite period of time. As a thriller fan myself, I would say The Purge is one of the best American thrillers and the final instalment was the closure fans needed from the franchise.
The delay in the release of The Forever Purge is an indication that the lockdown isn’t ending anytime soon. But luckily, films like Tenet by Christopher Nolan and Disney’s Mulan are still scheduled to be released in July. No official statement of their postponement has been released. Keeping in mind the eclipse on theatres, it will be no big news if these films are delayed too. Warner Bros.’s The Batman was also delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Directed by Everardo Gout and written by James DeMonaco, the franchise has been a huge success worldwide in both financial and fanbase aspects. Fans are eagerly waiting for the new dates of the release and hopefully will get them soon.
