8 Best Exorcism Movies That Will Give You Nightmares: The Exorcist, Chandramukhi, Constantine and More

True Horror fans know that blood and gore aren’t only the fear factor but the suspense and agony someone endures out of terror is what makes a classic Horror movie. Staying true to the previous statement, there are certain best Exorcism movies that are the real deal because not only do they give chills but they have a great storyline that backs it. Every moment of the movie will increase one’s curiosity to know what is going to happen to the possessed person and the demon’s backstory.

If you’re planning to watch a horror flick alone or with some of your pals, here is a list of the amazing Exorcism movies that won’t fail to give you nightmares.

8 Best Exorcism Movies to Experience Fear

The Exorcist – 1973

Did you know that many viewers got seizures while watching this movie in the theatre? In fact, this movie is banned in plenty of countries due to the realistic acting of little Linda Blair. The demonic voices, the bruises, the jumpscares, etc, were all so perfect that makes me wonder how in the 70s they gave such a blockbuster.

Additionally, there are some grotesque scenes especially the one where she pukes green. So if you’re not into that icky stuff, skip the scene, not the movie (hehe).

Hellhole – 2022

Exorcism movies have certain similarities like a girl getting possessed, a priest coming in to save the day, and such. Though it’s not a bad thing to repeat these concepts, Hellhole proved how good it would be to feel the exorcism fear from a new perspective. This Polish movie narrates the story of a police officer pretending like a monk in a monastery so he can find the reason behind disappearances. What he finds there is even darker than he thought.

The Wailing – 2016

The South Korean movie The Wailing has a whole new trend to an exorcism with the shaman, crowd, music, and rituals. When a Japanese police officer is assigned to a village where a mysterious illness is present, his true horror comes alive while he investigates the sudden killings as well.

The additional story in this flick is about the cop trying to find his missing daughter. I love how they ensured there is Horror and sentiment elements blended well together.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose – 2005

When someone dies during an exorcism obviously the law isn’t going to let them easily. That said, when Emily dies during her exorcism act, the priest is brought to the court where he explains in detail what happened, leaving the viewers to succumb to fear as the flashback scenes run on screen. Remember this movie is based on a true story so imagine how terrible the life of the real possessed woman would have been. Ah, chills…purely chills.

Constantine – 2005

We all have seen Keanu Reeves in action films but would you believe he nailed his character as an exorcist? Nope, not as a priest but as this cool young pal going around and making demons become submissive to him. Right from the beginning of the movie till the end, Keanu’s performance will keep us on the edge.

Keep in mind that this movie was made in 2005 so if some of the scenes feel like a drag, imagine how crazy this plot have been if it was produced in recent days.

The Possession – 2012

This movie is the definition of why we shouldn’t buy expensive products for a cheaper price. When a small child buys a mysterious-looking box for a smaller amount, little does she and her father know that they’re taking back home the most dangerous cursed vault that possesses kids. Truly a nightmare-worthy movie and a heads up to stop fulfilling every wish of your children.

The Cleansing Hour – 2019

Since some people love Horror stuff (that includes me), who won’t wish to watch a live stream of a priest exorcising a possessed person? Likewise in this movie, a fake priest (Ryan Guzman) uses this concept as bait and exorcises paid actors until one-day real evil takes the opportunity and possesses every single one of them, including the viewers.

Most importantly, even the President of the United States joins the stream and gets possessed. Damn. It is a bit of an exaggeration but wasn’t executed in a dumb manner.

Chandramukhi – 2005

Ask any South Indian about this movie and they’ll tell you how Chandramukhi still is one of the most loved Horror flicks. Compared to the graphics in movies today, this Tamil movie didn’t use much of them but purely relied on one actress’ power. When a family moves to a grand castle, the wailing lover ghost possesses a married woman there.

A lot of chaos happens but somehow a psychologist and a Guru plan a skit to make believe the soul’s wish is fulfilled. The best part of this movie is the exorcism, of course.
