The Banshees of Inisherin is one of the most talked about films to release last year and have proven it on record with eight nominations at the Golden Globe Awards 202. This record was last held by the film Cold Mountain (2003) and out of those, won three prestigious ones including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor – Musical or Comedy (Colin Farrell), and Best Screenplay.
Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the film follows lifelong friends Pádraic and Colm, who find themselves at an impasse when Colm unexpectedly puts an end to their friendship. A stunned Pádraic, aided by his sister Siobhán and troubled young islander Dominic, endeavours to repair the relationship, refusing to take no for an answer.
But Pádraic’s repeated efforts only strengthen his former friend’s resolve and when Colm delivers a desperate ultimatum, events swiftly escalate, with shocking consequences. The cast includes Colin Farrell as Pádraic, Brendan Gleeson as Colm, Kerry Condon as Siobhán, Barry Keoghan as Dominic, Pat Shortt, Gary Lydon and Sheila Flitton.
5 Moments From The Banshees of Inisherin
When Padraic Knocks on Colm’s door and Doesn’t Get an Answer
It is one of the introductory scenes of the film where we follow Pádraic for the first time and get a glimpse of the Island that they live on, the church and the landscape which gives it a cinematic depth. Like any other day, he knocks on his friend Colm’s door to go to the local pub but gets no answer. When he peeks through the window, he sees his friend just sitting there in silence.
Thinking he would follow along soon, Pádraic goes to the pub alone and even the bartender is surprised to not see him with Colm. This is the start of his anguish and worry about his misdeeds that could have led a tension in the friendship.

When Colm Says He Doesn’t Like Pádraic Anymore
Going into the film, we thought that Colm might share some reason that upset him about his friend, thus he is ignoring him. But for your friend to say that they don’t like them anymore and that hanging out with them is a waste of time, is truly heartbreaking. The confused and apologetic expressions by Colin Farrel in this scene say it all, while Brendan Gleeson stays unbothered about the other person’s feelings.

Colm Throwing his Severed Finger
After seeing the dispute between them; but Colm also saving him from the Police officer, we thought there would be some hope for them. Alas, Colm actually snips his finger to show how serious he really is about staying away from each other. This scene definitely shocked us and feels really bizarre that someone will go to that extent. This one moment of insanity really sets the tone for what is to come from Colm and maybe even relieves him, in some ways.

Dominic Confessing to Siobhán
If there’s any other character that really came through, then that’s Dominic. In its essence, he is just an innocent boy who needs love and care but gets everything opposite from it. This particular moment between him and Siobhán shows how tender his heart really is and he impeccably expresses the embarrassment of being rejected by the one you have feelings for. What later ensues is just tragic and one of the heartbreaking moments of the film.

Pádraic Setting Colm’s House on Fire
Throughout the film, we saw Pádraic trying to get Colm talking or get a reaction out of him, just so he knows that he still cares. But this moment shows how much everything has been bothering him, from his sister leaving to losing Jenny as well. The burning of the house marks the end of all the efforts of reconciliation and shows that there won’t be anymore. Earlier, there was no particular reason to end the friendship but now he has given Colm a big one, if not many.
