One of the most thrilling parts of a TV show is discovering that everything was destined all along – foreshadowed long before we saw it in the end. Writers leave breadcrumbs throughout a show, sometimes from the very first episode, that we are only able to figure out on a rewatch. Connecting the dots and understanding the symbolism turns out to be the most interesting parts of a drama, rewarding sharp-eyed viewers with a satisfying end that leaves them spellbound.
5 K-Dramas with Secret Endings
Signal (2016) – The Walkie-Talkie’s Final Message

2016’s Signal was a breakthrough series that left viewers scrambling for answers after the season ended. From the outside, the series is a gripping crime drama where detectives from different timelines come together to solve a dangerous case using a mysterious walkie-talkie. However, the finale opens so many doors that it flips the entire narrative on its head. The walkie-talkie’s final burst of static, the shockingly confusing ending of who lives, who dies, and the hundreds of questions left unanswered, left fans absolutely hysterical. Fans noticed how often background noise and static foreshadowed key turning points – the ending, thus, wasn’t fate, and there are other mysteries hidden there that we might never get to know.
Mr. Sunshine (2018) – The Train Scene

This melodramatic love story will leave viewers clutching their chests as they watch their characters go down a dangerous path of sacrifice. As Eugene and Ae-shin fight for their country’s freedom, careful fans couldn’t help but see how Eugene’s death was predetermined and written into the script. With repeated imagery of train tracks to his consistent references to never belonging anywhere, the series left us devastated with the ending, but also foreshadowed this heartbreaking fate more often than not.
Twenty-Five Twenty-One (2022) – The Lost Diary

This fan-favourite show’s controversial ending almost broke the internet during the time of its original release. However, central to the story is Hee-do’s diary, which served as the narrative structure that kept the series together. However, towards the end of the runtime, we realise that the diary isn’t written in real-time, the voiceovers and narrations are reflections of Hee-do’s relationship with Yi-jin, symbolising the fact that they were always destined to be a bittersweet memory of simpler times. It’s a realisation that will hit most viewers like a truck and will leave anyone heartbroken.
My Mister (2018) – The Silent Goodbye

This drama is a bleak story of two broken people finding solace away from the ups and downs of their everyday lives. The finale’s understated ending, thus, leaves us especially in our feels as Ji-an chooses to leave quietly and abruptly, leaving fans heartbroken beyond measure. However, we can’t say that the clues weren’t there. In fact, the series scatters clues about Ji-an’s eventual departure throughout, from her consistent habit of walking away without fanfare to every significant Ji-an moment taking place in front of a door or passageway; we were told all along that Ji-an’s healing required distance, not permanence.
Reborn Rich (2022–2023) – Reincarnation

In this tense chaebol drama, viewers are made to think that Yoon Hyun-woo has actually died and has been reincarnated by Do-jun, through whom he can take revenge for the company’s betrayal. However, episode 16 gives us a devastating realisation that Hyun-woo is back and that Do-jun is no more. He really is dead. This foreshadowing was scattered throughout the series and reminded us that Hyun-woo’s time as Do-jun served a particular purpose – of getting revenge and repenting for his own sins in Do-jun’s fate.
