10 Days of a Good Man Review

This conventional Turkish flick opens with a cold-blooded murder sequence before it eventually dives into the crux of the story. The sequence finds an unknown individual making a run for his life before he is eventually knabbed by a masked antagonist. And even though this sounds like a gripping setting, the fact that this has little to do with the rest of the storyline is not surprising at all.

Sadik (played by Nejat Isler), a former lawyer turned private eye, spends most of his time with several back-and-forth thoughts, matched only by his uneven romantic life (talk about detectives and their trouble with romance). One day, he takes up an unusual case of a missing boy Tevfik, who hasn’t returned to his place for a month.

Initially, the private eye is not so hopeful about the case, as he believes the boy might already be dead. However, as soon as he starts to investigate, Sadik learns there is way more than what meets the eye.

The pattern of this mystery thriller becomes quite repetitive right after the first fifteen minutes. At first, we are presented with a couple of facts, some lucky information, tips and leads, and a new discovery that repeats the chain of events. Moreover, this circle of private espionage feels a little intriguing at the start but becomes dull and ineffective towards the end.

As a whole, the film behaves more like a novel than a film, that stays on course with its source material. Usually, this method of sticking to the conventional points works really well, but not in the case of 10 Days of a Good Man. The film lacks the plot devices to keep you hooked with the unfolding tale, and doesn’t redeem itself at any given point.

Although there are points where you might catch up with the disoriented detective story, there is literally nothing that works out in the favour of the story towards the end. The acting front also feels a little casual at times, which just adds to the monotonous pace.

I am a fan of long movies and root for three-hour epics in general. However, this Turkish flick convinces me that some movies can be half an hour shorter.

If you are a fan of the private eye genre then you already have more than enough information to choose wisely. The film attempts to amaze us with its craft (with all heart) but has nothing substantial to offer.
