World’s End Harem Episode 4 Review: Venturing Beyond Fantasy To Sheer Wish Fulfillment

After taking a different path in last week’s episode, World’s End Harem Episode 4 takes us back to the original plotline of the show. Let’s see what this episode was all about in this review!

World’s End Harem Episode 4 Overview

World's End Harem Episode 4 Title

World’s End Harem or Shuumatsu No Harem in original Japanese is an Ecchi, Sci-fi, and Harem anime developed by Studio Gokumi of Tsuredure Children fame, alongside AXsiZ, which is known for shows like Seiren. The anime is based on a manga of the same name written by Kotaro Shono and LINK.

The series is directed by Nobuta Yuu, who has previously been involved with the productions of Bokura No and High School Fleet. The show was originally going to premiere in the Fall 2021 season of anime but was postponed to Winter 2022 due to some behind-the-scenes issues. After a decent week of a separate yet marginally connected storyline that featured way less sexual fantasy elements than the earlier episodes, we just had to return to the admittedly more plot-relevant parts of the show. However, the show didn’t just abandon the plotline. The episode mostly featured the aftermath of the previous one, as Doi got more comfortable being around multiple women and getting into bed with more than just his teacher.

The creator of the manga has admitted previously to this series as just being “silly male fantasy”, which is fair enough. He knew what he was writing while he was writing it, and the people who read this work knew from the get-go that they were reading a series that cares less about telling a story and more about giving the audience several steamy scenes that are varied and fall into the majority’s definition of “sexy”.

Reito World's End Harem Episode 4

Thus, it is even more perplexing that this show is an anime and not hentai, at least up to this point. With an anime, you at least expect a certain level of storytelling that stands out and makes people connect to the characters in a way that doesn’t stop once the blood stops rushing. My point here is, by this point, the anime should have done more to make people interested in its story rather than still rely on what drew people in the first place- sex.

I thought the show was on the right path by doing just that in the previous episode, but just as things finally looked to be going in the right direction, World’s End Harem Episode 4 put us right back where we started. Reito hasn’t gone anywhere and hasn’t made any progress, and now Doi is in the exact same position as him but with fewer reservations about who he wants to sleep with. The exact storyline that leads us here is complicated, as it revolves around their attendants being more or less competent. So far, Karen has been doing a much better job, as Mira has suffered several setbacks.

Overall, I hope that the plot picks up soon. There are bits and pieces scattered across every episode, but we are still missing the one major plot thread that ties everything together. Without it, the show might as well be just highly dissatisfying hentai with a flimsy plot and less of a reason to exist than malaria.

Verdict

World’s End Harem Episode 4 was a below-average episode that didn’t do much right and focused more on showing skin than putting some actual skin in the game.
