When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 6 Recap

As the Summer brings a new beginning to our beloved couple, Ae-sun and Gwan-sik wish for this peace to last forever. However, fate has other plans as a storm descends upon their lives, changing it all forever. While a tycoon, Gwan-sik is busy helping with the retaining wall while Ae-sun is feeding her sons their lunch, when suddenly Geum-myeong’s friend comes rushing into the house telling her that her daughter has met with an accident.

Flustered and scared, Ae-sun rushes to her daughter, telling her neighbour to look after her unattended sons while on the run. Unknown to her, the neighbour hadn’t heard her shout for help and seeing Ae-sun run like that, her sons too followed behind one after another.

Later, when Ae-sun returns home she is shocked to find none of her sons home and a feeling of dread sets in. Soon, her eldest son returns home but her younger son is still nowhere to be seen. A search operation for her younger son begins and the couple is also relentlessly looking for their son. However, what they finally find is the lifeless body of her son who was taken away by the sea in front of them.

This incident leaves the couple heartbroken but life needs to keep going on. Three days into the mourning, Ae-sun remembers the last conversation she had with her mother and finds the strength to face her family. However, it is on this day that both Ae-sun and Gwan-sik realise how their behaviour has caused their children anxiety as they both blame themselves for the loss of their brother.

Soon, the two gather their strength to move on with life but the anger within Ae-sun for the sea doesn’t diminish and this is the third time it took away her loved one. But Gwan-sik is always there by her side and tells her to live for their children and let go of the guilt she feels deep within herself. As Ae-sun cries her heart out in front of her husband, it is only years later that she realises that her husband kept blaming himself for working at the retaining wall on that particular day. He could never truly mourn for the loss of their child and had to stay strong for the family.

When her daughter asks the older Ae-sun how she got over that period, Ae-sun looks back at the time when the whole village helped her out in her difficult times. Be it the owners of the house she once lived in with Gwan-sik, who secretly brought her food during her pregnancy, or her stepfather’s new wife who paid for their rent for the first three months, or the villagers who brought whatever they could when they were mourning for their son.

The result of this takes us to an older Geum-myeong who gets into Seoul National University with her efforts, making everyone proud of her. However, Gwan-sik is worried about the boy whom they meet at the university, showing his interest in her daughter. Geum-myeong also proves herself to be Ae-sun’s daughter and gets a Gwan-sik of her own.

Meanwhile, the worries of the parents don’t diminish as Ae-sun is worried for her daughter who is living in a basement room. While she ponders over selling the field they have, Gwan-sik stops her and tells her that the land is her reward for surviving the tough Summer of their lives, the Summer that made them stronger.

When Life Gives You Tangerines Episode 6 Review

“It takes a village to raise a child” and this is exactly what we see in this episode that shows the kindheartedness and simplicity of the people once upon a time. There was surely once a time were a community protected, nurtured and even mourned for each other and this is the exact replica of such a community. Listening to our parents talk about their time which was simpler, I guess we can see what they mean by those words. This show is really capturing every bit of the theme that they had promised and I cannot stop loving every single episode.

The show has a beauty that captivates us in numerous ways, but what really makes it all the more amazing is the opportunity it creates for two generations to come together and share the experience that this show brings to us all. This is the magic of this Kdrama and I can say without a doubt that this show is meant to become one of the top Korean dramas of this year.

Altogether, this episode was yet another page of Ae-sun and Gwan-sik’s story and as they move on to the bigger hurdles in life, we are ready to see more of the extraordinary in their simplicity in the upcoming episodes.
