What If Episode 8 Recap: Plot Summary

‘What If… Ultron Won’ starts with Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Natasha Romanoff (Lake Bell) fighting Ultron’s (Ross Marquand) army. In the flashback, we see how Tony Stark (Mick Wingert) creates Ultron as we saw in Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, in this universe, Ultron kills the Avengers and gets his hands on Vision’s avatar. Basically, there is no Vision in this universe.

Ultron cuts Thanos in two halves and gets his hands on the infinity stones. That is how the evil AI learns about different planets and destroys them one by one to attain “peace”. Captain Marvel (Alexandra Daniels) has a powerful showdown with him. But he overpowers Carol Danvers with the help of the infinity stones. After destroying all the lives on every planet, the evil AI doesn’t stop.

Ultron becomes so powerful that he can hear and sense the presence of The Watcher (Jeffrey Wright), who is narrating the story. “I’ll find you”, says Ultron to him. The Watcher freaks out and tells us that Clint and Natasha are the only hope. They can prevent Ultron from destroying other existing universes. The duo gets their hands on Arnim Zola’s consciousness, which they plan to transfer into Ultron’s mind to tear him down.

Despite Natasha and Clint’s efforts, they don’t succeed as Ultron is not present in that universe. His army attacks both the Avengers and Clint sacrifices himself to save Natasha. On the other hand, Ultron finds The Watcher and is not happy with how he keeps watching the chaotic worlds. They fight across various universes, giving us a glimpse of how Steve is the president in one of them. We finally get to see The Watcher’s powers as he gives it all to save the multiverse.

Will The Watcher win the fight against the powerful, unstoppable Ultron? Will Ultron destroy the multiverse, leaving no sign of life? Will there be any saviours? Watch the episode to find out these answers.

What If Episode 8 Review: Discussion

Marvel continues to amaze us with each new episode. Another thrilling episode has been delivered by writer Matthew Chauncey and director Brayn Andrews. We finally get to see what would have happened if Ultron had won in Age of Ultron. To be honest, it’s not a pleasant picture. The episode is jam-packed with spectacular action and battle scenes from start to end.

The callbacks to various MCU movies, especially Avengers: Endgame, are marvellous. Despite being a stressful episode, the writer has added some jokes to cut the tension. The animation and cinematography are excellent. Several ‘WOW’ moments will make you rewatch the episode.

What If Episode 8 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, today’s episode is worth every minute. The build-up for the last two episodes has gotten wilder. Ultron is enormously powerful as he can devour even the multiverse.

  1. I like this story very much. Its amusing that the watcher doesn’t much care if ultron destroys world after world, but cries foul when he and the multi verse is threaten. The watcher should run of government office
