What If Episode 6 Recap: Plot Summary

Erik Killmonger (Michael B Jordan) rescues Tony Stark (Mick Wingert) when he is attacked in Afghanistan. Stark never meets Ho Yinsen and never learns about the consequences of the Stark Industry’s weaponry. Hence, the world doesn’t get their Iron Man. “Man was saved, hero was lost,” says The Watcher. Tony fires Obadiah Stane (Kiff Vandenheuvel) and appoints Eric as his company’s COO when Killmonger discloses that Stane planned the attack. Seeing Killmonger being so nice to Tony makes Pepper Potts (Beth Hoyt) suspicious.

Killmonger informs Tony that he intends to develop an automated combat drone that would render human soldiers obsolete. They begin working together on the drone, which requires vibranium. Stark sends Rhodey (Don Cheadle) to get vibranium from Ulysses (Andy Serkis), but T’Challa, aka Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), attacks them.  Killmonger kills both T’Challa and Rhodey, and we find out that he doesn’t have good intentions.  When Tony discovers the truth, Killmonger kills him as well. He claims Wakandans attacked Stark, but Pepper believes Killmonger was the one who killed him.

What If Episode 6 Review: Stark-Monger!

Killmonger is shown to be manipulating the Americans and Wakandans to become the Black Panther and conquer Wakanda. He arrives at Wakanda and earns T’Chaka’s (John Kani) trust by presenting him dead Ulyssess, accusing him of T’Challa’s murder. In vengeance for Stark’s death, the Americans, commanded by Thaddeus Ross, attack Wakanda but Killmonger conducts an effective Wakandan defence. Shuri (Ozioma Akagha), like Pepper, is suspicious of her cousin.

So, in another universe, will Killmonger become Black Panther? Will anyone ever find out what he did?  Some of the questions are answered in today’s episode.

Still from What If Episode 6
Still from What If Episode 6

The twist of Killmonger saving Tony Stark is enough to make today’s episode stand out. The story has been written intriguingly by Matthew Chauncey, with unexpected twists. Just when I thought that Killmonger is nice, at least in one universe, he proved me wrong!  Michael B Jordan voices the bad boy quite well. The episode comes to a thrilling conclusion with big cliffhangers.

Fans of Tony Stark will be devastated by this episode because he does not become Iron Man and dies once more. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is the fourth time Stark has been killed. If you are wondering who voiced Stark in the What If…? series, it’s actor Mick Wingert. Mick did a splendid job, sounding strikingly close to Robert Downey Jr.

Chadwick Boseman will always be our T’Challa/Black Panther and has some of the episode’s best lines. After a double horror dose, Marvel treated us with outstanding action scenes.  The animation is good, and the background music complements the episode’s deceiving tone.

Today’s episode was amazing in general. The director and writer experimented with major MCU plots, combining two stories to create a new one. The narrative had the potential to go wrong, but it didn’t.  I wish they hadn’t killed Stark again!
