Wall to Wall Ending Explained

The film opens with Woo-seung desperately trying to make enough money after buying a new apartment. He is desperate to do whatever it takes to make it in his life, but things are already starting to feel a little off. His downstairs neighbour seems to have something wrong with her and even barged into his apartment with a vendetta about the noise. Although he tries to tell her that it isn’t him, she refuses to listen.

He confronts his upstairs neighbour, Jin-ho, but he tells him that it’s the neighbour upstairs. He starts to go up the building, but everyone blames the person above them. He eventually ends up talking to the resident representative, Jeon Eun-hwa, who offers him compensation for his troubles. Meanwhile, he gets dragged into taking out a personal loan after getting insider information about a crypto scheme. He takes 85 million won from a loan shark and then invests it in the crypto scheme, waiting for an 815% return.

Soon, Woo-seung seems to slowly be losing his mind as he continues to hear odd noises all around. The neighbours all come together to confront him, and, in the commotion, it turns out that he had a playlist of construction noises going from his apartment. Somehow, in the commotion, his downstairs neighbours get attacked.

He is arrested and eventually gets caught when he is supposed to dump the investment, resulting in him losing all that money. Having lost everything, he decides to end his life, but after hearing the noise once again, he goes out to get revenge, only for Jin-ho to stop him. They eventually uncover a conspiracy – the penthouse people are trying to buy the entire place and are making the noise to get the tenants out.

As it turns out, Jin-ho was the one who was manipulating everything from day 1. He is a hacking expert and paired up with Gwang-cheol’s family to get Woo-seung arrested and keep him in jail for one morning. In exchange, Gwang-cheol’s family could extend their lease at the apartment. However, when his wife refuses to cooperate, Jin-ho kills her, right in front of Woo-seung. When asked why he chose Woo-seung, Jin-ho simply tells him that it’s because he looked the weakest.

Now deciding to put the blame on Woo-seung, he tries to frame him, but eventually the latter convinces Jin-ho to work with him.

Why did Jin-ho do all this?

Jin-ho learnt about the building’s structural issues back when Eun-hwa was a prosecutor and was overseeing the project. Jin-ho was an investigative journalist who wanted to expose the scam but got into a lot of trouble for daring to talk about it. Now, he wants to take revenge on her and asks her for the ledgers that will prove all of her wrongdoings.

However, Woo-seung eventually tries to help Eun-hwa, and after a lengthy fight, Jin-ho dies. Eun-hwa, though, attacks Woo-seung still and just when she’s about to kill him, after confessing to her crimes, Jin-ho comes back from the dead and stabs her to death. Tired of being told what to do, Woo-seung burns the papers and the penthouse with the dead bodies.

With his dreams dead, Woo-seung moves back home but wakes up in the middle of the night to rush back to the apartments to still find his property registration papers, implying that he simply can’t let go of the idea of the big life, despite everything that he has gone through.
